on the ride I carry (in addition to water) a mix of coconut water and Nuun. For coconut water this stuff is convenient freeze dried, super quality and lets you mix how you like it https://cocolectro.com/

Full disclosure: my son did the websites/ecommerce sites for both of those products, but I really use the products and pay monthly for the subscriptions
What is a 1:14 ratio? (No, I simply will NOT ride a 378" gear.)

I love to smoke weed before I ride. And if it’s a gravel or MTB ride, maybe a safety meeting mid-ride as well.

SIS and SKRATCH lab products. A coffee and pastry mid rise helps too.

yesterday I did 80 miles on 2 beers with IV liquid mixed in and a 2 16 ounce bottles of water and a box of hot tamales, today I feel ready to do another 80 miles. granted I was not going fast but stayed in the saddle for 4:28 and did not even have to stop to pee. only stopping was to wait for a couple of long traffic lights and to re-tie a shoe lace that loosened up. On wed I did 76 miles on basically the same route without the beer just water and IV liquid and was actually slower. both rides i did consume one cliff bar at the half way point.

There's something about this stuff that is like crack for me. I like to bring one in my back pocket for the halfway point. My buddies hate it when i drink it, cuz they either can't keep up, I become a chatter box, or both.

brewed in Austin, TX. Available on Amazon.

Over the decades, it's always seemed to be, generally speaking: plenty of sleep, electrolytes added to my water, a carb additive for the water if it's a higher-output activity, and a range of whole protein foods the rest of the day.

On the efforts where I've fallen short on any one of these (sleep, electrolytes, some carbs, and [later] proteins), I've required another day or two recovery. But, when I've gotten it "right," then I can do such higher-output efforts for many days, even weeks. Am not doing high-output sport anymore, these days, but the general approach still seems to work.

Some alternatives, if "pushing" exercise activities:
  • Hammer Nutrition's HEED
  • Hammer Nutrition's Endurolytes Fizz tablets
  • PLNT's organic plant protein powder (for an after-workout 'shake')
  • WheyTech's Pro 24 whey protein powder (for an after-workout 'shake')

Those aren't magic, but in my experience they improve performance and recovery compared to when not using them as part of exercising.
