It's always been a popular term used by bike reviewers in describing a bike fit. It doesn't seem to have a specific meaning either. Sometimes it refers to components like bars, stems and levers and sometimes refers to dimensions like reach and stack. Like they might describe a bike has having a "long, low cockpit". But I don't think I have ever heard anyone use the term "cockpit" in a spoken conversation relating to bikes.

Kerfuffle is the aim of this thread. What else is new? I feel like Dr. Riick.

Yah the Google def is FOS.
Cockpit for a bike includes CONTROLS and navigation equipment. Handlebar, brake levers, shifters, speedometer/ GPS, grips, mirrors, bell.
Pedals on a bike are DRIVETRAIN. You seat is not something that you look at and is NOT a control device.
Headset and stem is like the steering column of a car, it only holds the steering wheel/ bars on a bike.
And anyway, don't call anything FLAT bars. Now that is stupid.

“Build” makes me cringe, like brifter does for some and stable does for others.

As long as we are talking about cringing...
Campy doesn't really make me cringe, but it makes me wonder why people use it instead of just typing out Campagololo, Capagamalo, Campangolo... Oh forget it.
And that reminds me of..

....the guy who said ,"I thought it was a gay bar," is correct. But the one I'm thinking of is in Hotlanta. I'm a lumberjack, and I'm OK.

It hosts Djs throughout the week with various themed nights, which encourages dress codes like jockstraps, lumberjacks, sportswear, etc. Very popular on the weekends and the beer busts are a real good time. If you like manly men, leather and some drunken fun, check out The Cockpit in Atlanta.

I crashed over my handlebars the other day - so I guess I flew out of my cockpit!

And when anything about a bike is referred to as "lovely" or "stout." (In those cases, it grates because I know that it was borrowed, possibly unconsciously, from a folksy Grant Petersen screed.)
A guy I worked with in a bike store couldn't stand hearing seat stays referred to as "beefy" (a bit of hyperbole you don't hear anymore).

By the way, the meaning of the slang term "cockpit" in aviation, like the related "joystick," is not exactly family friendly. (Or is it?)

“Colorway” makes me cringe. And if my iPhone doesn’t recognize it, it must not be true.
A guy referring to his “taint” annoys me some. Haven’t seen that here for a while.

"Gruppo" or any of the variations unless the entire post is in Italian. "Custom" unless referring to a bespoke frame. "Pull the trigger" for obvious reasons.

But in case of bicycles, the origin of the term must be mostly to do with a greatly exaggerated sense of self-importance… or possibly a delusional justification to blow 8 grand on a bicycle.
