I just bought a threadless bottom bracket for my Viscount and then my LBS tells me they can't install it because the seat post tube extends into the bottom bracket area. I need to get this bike on the road asap. What can I do?

You could grind out the offending tube until it is flush or use a different BB. Do you still have the original BB parts? What crankset are you planning to use? I have a bunch of extra spindles lying around if you want to stick with the original design concept but use a different crankset.

tap the BB for italian threads and use a campy cup/cone BB.
this was standard procedure for 'upgrading' lambert/viscounts back in
the day. I know I had one.

This is what it looked like when I found it - it was a single speed with a TA crank and Campagnolo brakes.
Yeah - that's surface rust.
Everything you see hanging on it was stripped off and sold. I then cleaned and shot it with primer. I didn't really have a plan for it, and it sat until you popped up looking for one.

I didn't mean slow acceleration, I meant the handling. But I don't think I've ever tried one. How does it handle?

I'm in the middle of restoring my Viscount. Well, what I now know is a Viscount thanks to the people who ID'd it on here. Refitted new BB bearings, which despite the negative feeling you get off searching google, was actually easy and took about 45 minutes. I'm in the UK and I did notice a massive variation in bearing price. Some of the Ebay bike shops are charging around £13 per bearing. In the end I searched across Ebay using '6003-2RS' and bought two quality bearings including delivery for under £3.
I do have a question, I have a plastic gear cable guide fitted under the bottom bracket, but a braze on cable guide on top of the rear fork. I can only think the plastic guide has been added, is a clamp on cable guide the usual system for cable guides on Viscounts?
And does anyone think that chainset is original?

Thanks k_as_in_knife, there is a little dip in the top of the BB as though something has been removed. Looks like its had all the braze on bits removed at some time in its life, although I don't know why they left the one on top of the chainstay. It does have an amazing lacquered paint job, something else that probably isn't original!

Bear in mind that they were designed for a specific fork that has now, on most models, been replaced with something else. So two otherwise identical bikes may now have different forks and therefore different handling characteristics. And then there's the nutters who re-rake their forks for cosmetic reasons....

Death fork? Naaaah!!
They handle better than you might think. Good climbers, solid, stable descenders. Not a crit bike, but responsive enough.
I rode mine 185 miles in the rain a couple of years ago and it brought my tired, soggy butt home in grand style.
