Performance Bicycle Bankruptcy

Just used my last Performance product I had. Nice killer blue rim strips for my blue Trek MTB!

Today is the final day of business for the Performance store near my work. Everything was marked 75% off when I went in on Friday and found they had sold nearly everything. I got a few things that were loose in bins that had been in the shop cabinets. Since the price was not marked, those items were rung up as very cheap or free. Fewer retail choices now outside of Portland city limits.

I still am riding a set of Performance Bike sealed bearing wheels with MAVIC MA2 rims purchased in about 1985. They have never needed truing or any maintenance.
Is bicycle retailing all online now?
I don't have a local bike shop any longer. It's not that I need one but it is unusual once you recognize this fact.

Seriously though, few leaders admit but online only is eating the US bicycle market from the inside to 'out'.
Much to point blame. It won't disappear but its rapidly shrinking in all sector's. For some, the emerging 'E' bikes is at the fringe of defining cycling, though its the only area of growth. May or may not be the saviour.
And it too might short circuit when dealers won't be able to adapt, nor service or stock (slow to lack of mfg. supplying) replacement parts (OEM controllers, internal nylon gears, harnesses, etc.)
Next, the concerns are consumers buying e bikes online. Drop shipped to the door. Good luck.

I've always wondered who made the Performance branded hubs. Interesting too that Performance also had P branded spokes.

The store in Greensboro is still open and selling at 40-50% off. This I read from my friend at CDO.

The PB near me is 15 miles away and for the past month has been liquidating all item up to 70% off.
Just last week it was half empty and this week the whole store got restocked.

My store has been grinding along pretty much business as usual, continually restocking and not seeming like they are going anywhere anytime soon.
I was told they would be liquidating stock through there as long as it takes so who knows.

Don't think so... sorry!
...I'm not 100% for sure, but I think these guys are the same guys that used to be Niagara.
Most of the products I saw there are Sunlite.
Niagara offered a broad array of high quality American made and
foreign parts, which are not found on the Bike World USA dot com
site you link to. Further, there was no ABOUT link on the site that
I could find, a common indicator of Chinese control.
Too bad.

However, anything that improves the life of those who worked at the corporate HQ and the stores is fine with me.
After all, the corporate HQ were mostly bike people. They rode to work, they rode at lunch, they rode after work. They embraced the culture.
I bought a Merckx EMX-3 from one of the corporate employees. He arrived in Chapel Hill with the bike (which was from Colorado Cyclist). He won some Zipp wheels at work, and just couldn't bring himself to ride a competitor's bike, so he sold it to me and built his Performance carbon frame up with the Zipps and employee-discounted Dura Ace. That's saying a lot. His wife had a garage business sewing and making custom bags for bikes. These were bike people, thrilled to make a living in that atmosphere.
In that area, the Performance store was the LBS for a lot of people, and acted like it. I bought consumables there and often scavenged the clearance table.
Walmart and other discount chains hurt Performance as much as Performance hurt small independent bike shops. Retail is basically merciless. Very much like the furniture industry, China will always figure in to things, as they slowly dominate the retail market, just like they slowly destabilized much of the African continent and parts of South America by selling AK-47's and ammo below cost. Just an observation, but patience seems to be a virtue on one side, and American entrepreneurship has always answered challenges. Interesting to see how it turns out.

I stopped in the local Performance shop while I was out today. They close this weekend... and said the "deal" to buy Performance fell-through. They only had a handful of anything. Could have bought a bike cheap enough ($40) to resell on Craigslist at a profit. But instead I picked up some parts-bin supply's old skewers at 25 cent each (I needed one for my trainer).

Of all the randomness on that site, and there is a ton, my favorite may be the used bikes section. A handful of kids bikes for pickup only, and its a struggle to even find out where the company is located to pick up the bikes!

Well, I finally got to a store, and picked up a nicer Park multi-tool, plus an Axiom USB headlight. Needed both. 😎 At another shop, I grabbed a new cassette for the Cannondale, with a 36t large gear. 👍

I went by my local PBS on 2/1 and it was closed up and empty. I never saw any real good deals and they never had anything more than 50% off.
