I like the mention at the end of the cyclocross article to the "version of 'cross" practiced by some Northern Californians that involves "plunging thousands of feet down mountainside trails" on "sturdy one-speeds". Is that Bicycling's first reference to Repack rides?

While I was not this magazine's audience, the later mid 70's was probably the most honest era for Bicycling! Magazine.
later Bicycle Guide did a reasonable job for the most part.
for a short while Bicycle Times was a decent magazine.
The Two Wheel Trip had promise then vaporized after 2 issues.
asphalt was another that went belly up, reincarnated as red kite prayer then that ran its course, now the cycling independent.
magazines and the web are a tough biz
later Bicycle Guide did a reasonable job for the most part.

If bicycling magazine was still like this I’d subscribe but the last time I bought on, early 2000s?, it was mostly ads and buyers guide.

Bike World was another good, but short-lived magazine of the era. When Bicycling was bought by Rodale, it was never the same

Wow, that is a lot of camera to carry in one photo. In the 70's I carried a Minolta 16QT "spy camera" on the bike, sort of a weight-weenie solution; no matter because I hardly ever took photos (still the case!)
