I'm occasionally tempted, mostly out of boredom, to join a bigger event - there's a ride to the west of me that does a good job with police, volunteers, signage, road closures, support, food & drink, etc - but then I think about (or run across) the types of folks likely to participate... yeah - no. Along those lines, I came across a fairly large ride today, split in to three groups, going in the opposite direction. Yeah, spreading out like a blob, not particularly paying attention, had to call out a time or two to head off a head-on, etc.
Plus, they didn't look as cool and fashionable as me, so who wants to associate with that?!

I was not on the ride. My friends saw the aftermath likely a few minutes after the crash. It happened along the route. I know the rider was struck by a pickup, but unclear if he crashed and then hit by pickup (sounds plausible) or if pickup clipped rider and caused the crash.
Either way, it’s a tragedy for the rider and his family.
My friends did say that, as is typical, cyclists of all abilities were on the road and were misbehaving, riding 5 abreast, sometimes crossing the center line, etc., if you have ever done an organized big ride like a charity ride you know this. That danger factor is why I avoid large, mass-start events and choose to do small group rides with 4-10 friends who I know and trust to ride as safely as possible. I was invited and even encouraged to do the mass start century yesterday but chose to skip it.
Be careful out there, kids!

It felt great to be back on the bike. Thankfully, I remembered how. 28 easy km, on a route I haven't done in a long time. I was reminded of its attractiveness. Great surface and little traffic. A spur road to a tiny village, at the end of said road. I rode through a herd of sheep and waited for a couple turkeys to cross the road.

Out for a family walk, visiting a book store along one of the neighborhood lakes, and had to take a one block detour to see this - a Frank Lloyd Wright house that I'd learned of at the museum a couple of weeks ago -
There are evidently two more Wright houses within a few miles, though the closest one doesn't seem very visible from the street.

I might be able to grab KOM next week. Have a 115ish gravel ride with almost 9500 planned (if wife allows). She’s working a booster clinic, so I should be okay

Ha. Sounds like fun, but I can barely plan dinner with my family, so that may be a tall order.

I do some gravel events now and then, but some seem to have lost steam post-COVID and many are at times of the year with really iffy weather; I've been burned paying for rides that ended up being 39⁰ and rain.

Speaking of historic homes, the farmhouse where Jim Croce lived for several years and wrote/recorded most of his music is in Lyndell PA and we ride by it frequently on our rides. On yesterday’s ride I noticed they put up a big metal “historical significance” sign out front and, maybe not coincidentally, a crowd of maybe 50 people on the property. Every other time we have ridden by there is no one there. He is buried in a Jewish cemetery about 1 mile from our house. He was an amazing talent, taken away too early from us.

As we're walking around the lake, I hear an older male cyclist call out a pass. I didn't hear the specifics, but the elderly woman being passed took offense. They started jawing at each other, but the guy pulled away. Grandma was *not* done, though - she thumbed a button on her bars, I heard her e-bike spin up, she closed the gap on the guy and proceeded to yap at him over his shoulder.

Out on the mountain bike today, mostly on roads and as I headed up a canyon a road rider pulls alongside me and it's a friend I haven't seen in a few years. He used to be president of our club but he had moved out of the area. Now, he's back as they had kept their old house. Anyway he looked as fit as ever, (he was always fast af) and we stopped and chatted for an hour. A good day.

Same here. My lead on the board was tenuous at best but now we have drizzle and winds.

I really only look at the board when others mention it, though. I pay more attention to my CTL and weekly TSS.

it’s tough for me to get that much in a week where won’t ride until Thursday. My morning ride are usually about 20-22 with 800-1200
Do it- I have a some sweet floral brooks brothers shirts that would go with that

Ok, so we are tentatively planning to go to Spain in April, and toward the end of the visit will be in Mallorca for the 312. We have usually gone to the southern state of Andalucia, and we have a comfort level there, but for proximity to/from Mallorca it makes more sense to stay in the Valencia/Alicante region. Anyone know good cycling locales there?? I may have to cross-post in the Western Europe forum
