Really nice job and great bike. I love old MTBs. By and large, they're not worth much compared to road bikes but they're fine versatile machines.

Really nice work! I have an 89' 950 and it is a great bike. It was suprisingly light when I weighed it, about 26lbs.

Cleaned up very nicely but one question.
How the heck is the fork staying in the headset in the 2nd "cleaned" picture of just the frame? Should it not... fall? You don't even have the upper bearings or cone on.
I've always like the 900 series of bikes from Trek. I think we have a 950 with suspension at the shop right now. Very nice bike. Very few miles.

Wow. Nice top end MTB for the pinnacle of the fully rigid era! Usonian made too!
@bikemig - FWIW, In my neck of the woods, the days of buying nice vintage MTB's for a song is over. Over $1000 is not unusual for a vintage Stumpjumper or something. If you can still buy them cheap you are lucky.

We sell vintage stuntjumpers for $100 at the coop.
Vintage MTBs really aren't worth that much unless they're in "like new" condition or were something special "Fat Chance", maybe a super early "Fisher."

You might find an old Hard Rock or something for that price, but not a Stumpjumper, at least not normally. That was the case here to maybe 10 years ago, but it has changed. I'm sure some folks still get a lucky deal.

The thing is, for most people, they're just old mountain bikes. There really isn't anything special about the stunt jumpers (they weren't the first, and today they aren't really... comparable to modern bikes), and no one is going to buy a 20-30 year old bike that's been clearly used for any decent price. We sell most rigid old mountain bikes for $100-$160. If it has a front suspension fork, that could go up to $180. I don't recall ever selling an old mountain bike for more than that. (Unless full suspension or newer.) I mean heck, we GIVE AWAY beat up vintage mountain bikes. (Much to my dismay.) We have a super cool green univega something or other at the shop right now that's being given away to somebody who needs it or sold for $100. I think the bike is super cool, personally.
That said, we do have a really early Fisher at the shop that is in immaculate condition. Despite being a hard-tail, we'll probably ask a few hundred for it. (Once we can get the crank off of it to fix the BB. The threads are stripped, and we can't grab it with a gear puller, and we don't want to do the usual "hammer a pickel fork between the BB and crank" for fear of damaging the frame. We're thinking of making a tool with "hooks" to grab the 5 arms of the spider securely.)

Fantastic job. These pop up all the time on craigslist near me being in Trek's backyard and it's hard not to buy them each time.

I'm not a mountain bike guy, but man, that looks fantastic! Beautiful work! Makes me think it shouldn't get dirty again it looks so pretty.

Beautiful 970, it really pops in that color.
Trek 9xx usually go for $100-150 around here. I was lucky to get a nice lugged 930 for $40 with flat tires out at the edge of town.
I have seen high priced examples stay on Craigslist for a long time. They should be worth more but they just don't seem to bring the $$.

Those make excellent full-on touring bikes. I rebuilt a 930 with all Campy (what can I say, I am a Campy bigot) and it is a delight to ride.
