Had a customer bring a Colstar Claud Butler (or perhaps a Claud Butler Colstar?) into the shop today for a tune. Looks to be late 70's, lugged 531 frame with mostly Campy NR components. Sweet bike in great shape. Anyone ever hear of it? I'd be interested in any information that can be provided - who made 'em? where? for how long? reputation? Just curosity on my part, as I've never seen or heard of this bike before.
Thanks,
John

Claud Butler was a good British frame-building shop in the '30's through to the '60's. The Classic Rendezvous website has some pics of some oldies but goodies. I have never heard of "Colstar," though. My guess - and it is a flat-out guess - is that it was a model name. In any event, if it's a Butler, it is almost certainly a well-made frame.

well, you're not alone - in 2003 there was a guy looking for information on a colstar just like yours...no one over there was able to help either. I am pretty sure that colstar is an Aussie Beer, so you might have a sponsor's name on a race bike.

Yeah, I know this is a 2006 "undead" thread, but
by this period the Claud Butler brand was owned by Holdsworthy (the "factory" as opposed to the "shop" source for Holdsworth bicycles and a couple other brands. CB being the next biggest)
if you compare the specs i bet there's a Holdsworth model that will correspond nearly identically to this CB Colstar...but I have not done that myself.
Can't take up ALL the fun, can I?
