Nishiki with CAMPY dropouts!

Here are some pics of the frame. NO numbers anywhere that I have found. Paint appears original. I believe T-Mar has one like this except braze on FD. Any help appreciated ID'ing this frame. Any thoughts on componets that would have come on it. As you can see, there is a Nuovo Record headset on there. It also had a GB stem.

velocejoe, there are three Nishikis that had Campag dropouts and braze-ons that I know of. The Ultimate (which I have) made in Japan and the Maxima and Cervino made in Italy. The lugs on the one in your pictures look like those on a Maxima frame I've seen that was supposedly made by Colnago.

quick question here,

I am riding an '86 nishiki century. Has anyone upgraded to a 9 or 10 speed group set? I am thinking about it, but not sure the cassette would fit. any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Pics and serial number to follow.

KS290709 on bottom of BB shell

Anybody know how to make/buy replacment decals? Just the downtube 'Nishiki International' would be ok.

Nishiki International. Components dated 1974. Touring geometry - lots of space between the rear wheel and the seat tube.
Low miles -drivetrain has almost no wear -all equipment is probably original
Aluminum wheels, high-flange hubs.
Front wheel is 'Weinmann Made in Belgium' and a Shimano hub.
Rear wheel is 'Araya Made in Japan' with the same style Shimano hub.
Don't know why mismatched - no other sign of ever having been serviced
Suntour V-GT Luxe rear der., date code 'QB' [Feb 1974]
Suntour Compe V reverse-acting front der (pull cable to shift to inner ring). Date code 'QF' [May 1974]
Suntour 5-speed freewheel, 14-34
Sugino Maxy 3-bolt crankset, 1/2 step, 54-48 rings, 'American Flyer' decals around each of the three bolts, swaged, arm marked 'Forged 171 49-7' [July 1974]

I find it interesting that my 1982 Olympic 12 mixte (serial KB 1755) looks a lot like yours but has chrome tipped forks.

I have an '86, although I'm still hoping someone can enlighten me as to what model it is. I'm using a 9spd sram cassette with my light action rear derailleur & friction shifters. No problems other than it doesn't want to shift into the biggest cog.

OH WOW!!
This was my first road bike when I was young! When i first saw that picture my heart started to race and got that funny stomach feelings like I just saw an old x-gf!!
It was stolen out of my college dorm in 2004 .
I put 10s of thousands of miles on through my teen years. Had an vintage campy crank, and a rear wheel with a superb quality hub that I dragged all the way back from Paris for the 6 speed setup. Had a nice deep dish mavic wheel on the front! It also has some white and red vintage look pedals. Also, now that I think about it, had a Cinella stem. Arghh I miss it!

Hi! Just traded this old bike. The last owner said it was a Nishiki, but had remowed the stickers. The lugs are a lot like thoose on the yellow Olympic on page 15 or perhaps even more like thoose on the silver Olympic on page 14. Serial nr DA01405. Got a bag of filfthy and rusty parts, haven´t checked them out yet. Thinking 'bout fixing it to a nice randonneur. Any info helpful

New Nishiki aquisition

Well I picked up my fourth Nishiki a couple of weeks ago. This time a Competition. I'm guessing about a 1975 model based on the SunTour date code on the rear derailleur. The paint is pretty badly scratched so I have made it into my weekend beater and use it for joy rides on my days off. The serial number is KS328728 with the large script W on the bottom bracket shell. I have changed just a few things: Spidel pedals, 6-speed freewheel, side pull brakes, and swapped the 46 tooth ring for a 42. I have also started stripping paint from the forks and stays to create half chrome stays and forks for the classic look.

Current list of Nishikis:
1972 Semi-pro
1975 Competition
Nishiki Pro, late 70's
Nishiki Rally, early 80's

Your Competition would appear to either a 1974 or 1975 model. The new serial number format came into use in 1975, but there is still the possibility that yours could be a 1975 model manufactured in late 1974. Does it use the old "bamboo" style logo as on your 1972 or does it have the newer block style logo? Also, while I have the the serial number for the 1972, I don't the serial numbers for the Pro or Rally. It would be appreciated if you could supply these, along with new links to the pics, which don't appear to be working.

Serial number for Pro; NP7X3 0008. There may be a fourth 0, hard to tell because the BB shell has a clover leaf cut out. Uses the Bamboo script "N" with "Nishiki" on a banner underneath. I have only the frameset but it does have a Dura Ace EX sticker and I believe the EX gruppo was only used for a couple of years in the late '70's.

Serial number for the Rally; KD02904. Uses the bamboo script "N" for the head badge (sticker). I also picked up the Rally as a frameset. Based on the lack of a gear hanger and the weight of the frame it must have a pretty low end bike. I have built it up into a rider with parts laying around the shop and it is heavy but a pleasant ride withal.

We've seen a lot of different serial number formats on the Pros, so there's not enough data to decrypt the formats, but a bamboo style should indicate pre 1975. The Dura-Ace EX sticker may have been added later, as this group was produced from 1978-1984.

The Rally was definitely made in 1984 though could be a 1985 if made late in the year. If it has the typical block lettering, it should be a 1984.

So, is the Competition, bamboo or block font?

Not sure what you mean by block font. The head badge is the old American Eagle type with a silver eagle's head a large N or M with Nishiki in what might be bamboo font? The thing is riveted on and is identical to the '72 Semi Pro badge. Downtube has "Nishiki Competition" with Nishiki in what must be the bamboo font and Competition in a different font. Pic is of Competition headbadge.

That's what I call bamboo font on the Nishiki logo of the Competition. It should be 1974 model. There's another Competition in my database with a slightly higher KS3xxxxx and it has the newer, block font logo , which appears to have come out in 1975.

If this decal on the headtube is what you are describing, then the Dura-Ace EX decal is correct for the time period of this model (late '70s).

Among the junk that came withe the bike is a Shimano Altus f/r derailler-set.

This is another oddball serial number. However the Altus derrailleurs should place it circa 1980.

1985 Riviera Gt

i just bought this last week for $20..this is my first nishiki..most bikes i ride are fixies or single speeds..this one i will be keeping the way it is..
i haven't seen any riviera gt's on this web site..if anyone can give some info on them it would be cool.

Circa 1985, upper entry level, grand touring bicycle. ~ $300 original price. Nice bicycle at a great price! Another member started a thread on his about one week ago.
