Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Rides - Last Weekend of May!

It's the last weekend in May ........ where are you riding and/or where have you ridden??

Friday - 87.8 km ... a farewell tour out to the place where I've spent a lot of time working in between school. Gorgeous sunny day at +26C with a wind.

From Friday's ride:

sadly I'm going to miss all your threads/ post of your rides in and around Alberta. I'm sure there are plenty of great rides where you are moving too, but just the same......

Back on topic, if I don't get at least 40 miles in tomorrow, I'm going to go crazy. It's been a long week of working at a customer site in Cambridge Ma. I'm so sick (read jealous) of seeing everyone riding to work on bikes. The only consolation is there's a Peets coffee in Harvard Sq.

Ride report to follow

Tomorrow I'm leading a ride out of Marshall, VA south and west to "little" Washington. We'll ride up and around some of the hollows just east and below Skyline Drive. Really pretty. A little bit of gravel/dirt. 72 miles and I've got an option in mind to make it 79 if there are a few takers. Mostly rolling hills.

Sunday it's a flattish ride (51 miles) close to DC that will likely attract lots of riders.

I've done two hilly centuries for May and a 75 mile ride in or near the Catoctins in Maryland. It's been an excellent month despite a lot of rain. We escaped a thunderstorm deluge by minutes on a century two weeks ago. That was a thrilling ride with a fast finish. The storm was chasing us and we rode it's front back to the parking lot.

I'll miss riding around this area too .... but I'm also looking forward to cycling in Australia with Rowan. I'll still post threads about my rides!

Today (Friday) 7200 feet in 58 miles and one 4 minute break. For the month I have 549 miles and should get another 80 in this Sat and Sunday.

28,000 feet of climbing for the month, trying to get back into shape!

Seconds after completing the 7200 ft... Some say the more I climb, the more I look like Elvis!...An old fat Elvis but hey, Elvis was cool!Hehehe!

Will do some riding this weekend, not sure how much. 1200km for the month so far, the most I've done this year in a month.

I'd imagine there's a good brevet scene down under - are you going to do any big rides when you get there, after you settle in?

Not 161 km?

I guess when you measure in kms a "century" doesn't matter as much.

This is the Audax Australia site: https://www.audax.org.au/public/

It is winter there so there aren't many long brevets going on just now, but there are a few shorter ones in the area where we'll be living. That's probably about all I can handle at the moment ... I haven't had much time to ride over the winter, so I'm just building up now.

I measure in kms, but would have a lot of trouble stopping at 153!! I'd have to ride around the block a few times.

Not looking likely for me this weekend at all... and it's been raining all week. The last downpour I rode through on Memorial Day (at the end of a 50mi. ride) left all of my equipment soaked for days since the sun never came out.

And i've got a photo workshop all weekend (Rolando Gomez if anyone knows)... I might get in a late evening ride if I've got anything left.

Cool! I'll be out in the general area for part of this ride:

I haven't decided yet whether I want to go north or south on Skyline after the climb in from Sperryville. It depends on how my legs are feeling

My brother, Dan, and I are headed for Canyon de Chelly National Monument and the Lukachai Mountains, on Navajo land in Arizona - high deserts and forested slopes, Anaszi ruins and Navajo hogas as a backdrop. We plan to integrate Navajo tacos and mutton stew into the ride schedule. (Pics at https://icyclist.blogspot.com)

Obviously, your current shape is much better than when you bought that oversized jersey. Get a new one to complement your new shape

Can't possibly understand why anyone EVER thinks or thought Elvis was cool. Fat or not. to me, he was just another alcoholic redneck. You look much better than that, so don't lower your standards beaner man

On another note, I may or may not do a 20 mile ride later today. Want to try out the new PT wheels. Tomorrow may do a 65-80 mile ride and another 65 mile ride on monday as I don't go into work until later than usual.

Nice ride and beautiful weather, but it is hard to get things going that early - plodded along....

57m today in North Texas. Absolutely beautiful day, about 65 when I started and 75 or so when I got home with little wind. With 30 or 40 miles tomorrow I will end up with over 700m for the month.

We went out early this morning -- it was clear, cool, windless -- tackled a major hill we haven't ridden since Feb. and then shifted into the 59/11 for the rest of the ride. Hammered out 44 miles, 18.6 mph avg. Fun stuff!

At the 18.6 mph speed ave, you must have been grinding it out at like 40 rpm

Had the ulitmate free pass yesterday. I had the day off, and the wife and kids were all working and at school. Translation: no honey-do list, no responsibilities.

Woke up to rain....ugh.

Rain ended around 9am. Let the roads dry out for an hour or so and then went on an 80 mile cruise around Westchester County NY. About 5000 feet of climbing. Got home in time to light the grill and make dinner.

When were you out there? And were you wearing a yellow-ish jersey? And did you pass a cyclist in blue on a blue bicycle like she was standing still?

Got in 36 miles or so this morning, on the bike shop ride. It's normally a 20-miler, but they stretched it, due to weather and roadwork.

I'm only 10 miles away from having 1000 km this month, so I'll go ride another 10 miles here in a bit.

Drove north to the Galena area of Illinois for some hill work. Did 31 miles and conquered my first 15% grade hill and didn't have to use my granny gear. Nothing to most of you, but I was pleased.

85 painfully slow miles...

I have been dragging a friend around the past month getting him ready for a century ride next weekend around Lake Tahoe...

He is a good rider and a good guy, just slower than me...

If he can do the 85 miles, he is ready for the century...

But how will he handle the altitude...

I'm in the transition between large training volume and less volume/more intensity for a racing weekend in two weeks. Today was an 85% effort day for about 35 miles. Tomorrow will be a race team group ride and who knows how that will go. As for me I will go for a fair amount of saddle time (even if I have to leave the group to get in more miles) and a couple of longish efforts (wait for a serious break to develop and then drag everyone else up to the break kind of thing).

Next week will be HELL! (But not that many miles or hours.)

The following week will be taper with a couple of very intense moments.
