Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I believe the king of consecutive posts and self-quoting was PCAD.

I still miss him.

Of course, my mom was critical of the situation, and "would never have done such a thing" and loves to comment on how she never left me until I was 8.

Each time Lilly would fuss slightly, she would find something else to be critical about. Eventually I got fed up and I told her that I needed her to stop being so critical and start being more helpful, and that everyone else was more helpful, especially my in laws (SIL, MIL etc). She immediately started helping me.

Important to note, I have a great relationship with my parents and there was only a slight tinge of frustration in my tone, really not that mad about it. I don't expect much to change long term and I'm fine with that.

I have a good relationship with my parents as well. I know I came off as kind of harsh, my mom has a habit of causing tension between me and Lily. I think I have said this before but I am basically Raymond from Everybody Loves Raymond.

My mom can be very opinionated and she has a way of making you feel guilty. Compound that with my job when I am gone half a week, my mom doesn’t get it. My mom and dad both had to work, and I know my mom would have loved to not work and raise her kids. So, I think, my mom sees that Lily doesn’t have to work and that Lily must have it soool easy, my mom fails to realize that Lily has to do it all on her own.

Not only does Lily take care of the kids, but she manages the house. She pays the bills, does the budget, arranges play dates, signs the kids up for activities, cleans the house, makes the food from scratch etc. I just go to work, and pick up the slack when I am home. Half the time I don’t even know what day of the week it is.

We are both getting tired of Holidays and Birthdays. Lily and I want a year where we don’t celebrate a single one. Every week it’s something.

Well I just want to say I feel for you, Bam. A month is a long time to be away, in any circumstances. You’re giving us a bird’s eye view of the glaamorous life of the airline pilot. I will see it differently next time I bump into them at Fairfield Inn. I hope you can find a workable solution.

Hey big john I plan to be out in LA in early to mid-May for my daughter's graduation.

We are staying in LA but I do want to try Mt Baldy, is there ANY risk of ice/snow at that time of year? My memory is not perfect, but I recall a couple visits ago in ?March there was snow/ice so I did Mt Wilson instead, and even Wilson had some slush on the way to the top.

Is that Rob Reiner?
I guess I’m gonna have to do a film fest of sorts. My memory is failing me . Another one I would add is “King Ralph”.

You know which Holidays we jam on. We're also lucky that both our birthdays are in December, so we fit that nonsense around Christmas. Of course, there are the dogs birthdays too, but they're in March, so that's easy to squeeze in. Heck, we reuse their gift bags and everything....

Naw, not in May. Bigger risk of high heat in the lower stretches of the climb though.

With the unusual weather we've had this year, it's hard to speculate. The high point on the climb to Baldy Village is only 4400, or so, but there is sometimes ice in the shade near the top of Glendora Ridge Road. Best to check conditions closer to the time you want to go. If you decide to go beyond the village to the ski lifts (end of the road) it's 6000 feet up there, so more likely to get icy.

In a normal year I think ice is not likely in May. I'm sure I could get info from locals in May. People are going up there all the time.

My Mom was hard on all her DILs, at least at first. My oldest brother's wife joked that it wasn't till Bro got cancer (cured 30 years ago!) that Mom relented, and it seems to have worked that way with Mrs. GJ, too, though in that case it was Mrs. GJ who got the cancer. The other thing is when Mom got to her 80s, she lightened up about everything and seemed to remember only the good times. She talked about how much fun we all had when they came to visit us, apparently not remembering that she was miserable and make Mrs. GJ miserable, and we never knew why - the first few days, as much as a week, she was just awful, and then one day like a switch flipped, she was fine and had a great time.

I loved Mom and I miss her, but she was not kind to Mrs. GJ, which always put me in the middle. You just gotta remember who your family is NOW.
