Photos from my recent ride in Italy and Switzerland
In July, 2023, I did an 18 day tour of Northern Italy and Switzerland. Of the over 1250 photos I took, I've selected about 55. I rode through several river valleys (Piave, Brenta, Adige, Inn, Brembo, and others), so there are lots of water pictures.
It was a good tour. Switzerland is always beautiful. In Italy it was hot and humid. In Switzerland, it was rain and thunderstorms. An interesting combination.
One highlight was the Engaden (Inn River) Valley in southeast Switzerland. The milky blue Inn river starts near the Maloja Pass, which separates Italy and Switzerland west of St. Moritz, an area full of very pretty lakes.
The bike paths along the rivers in Italy are an inspiration and I saw dozens, if not hundreds, of bike riders on them. Some places I saw for the second time. The Valsugana (Brenta River Valley) is a beautiful as ever, though in July very busy. There are now Bici Grills right on these bike paths that offer food, drink, shade, toilets and even showers which make biking on these piste ciclabile even better!
The Adige Bike Path (which also has several Bici Grills) starts in Verona (I got on in Trento),\ and goes all the way up and over the Passo di Resia (and further into Austria). It was easy to follow, had lots of services, many wild sections, wasn't too steep until the last 10 miles, and was a great route.

Did you come down the Brenta from Primolano? In 2013 I spent nearly two weeks outside of Bassano del Grappa doing day rides, including on through Enego, near Primolano, Foza and Galio. The bike path along that part of the Brenta is wonderful. We were there in late May through early June, so it wasn’t that busy. But we could tell that the area is a big tourist draw.
One Sunday we did see numerous, large group rides. At the back of one group was a guy riding a MTB that had no front fork (and thus no front wheel). Our host told us that a local legend used to climb nearby Monte Grappa that way.

In a past bike tour, I rode from Bassano del Grappa (ultimately, Milan) up the Brenta to Trento, spending the night in Primolano. This time, we came over the Scala del Primolano, the set of switchbacks above Primolano that is the pass from the valley of the Piave River.

Valdodiadene is a seat of Prosecco production. We stopped at a nearby villa for snacks and coffee. There were photos of Sandra Bullock taken during her stay there.

Lots of WWI history in parts. If you pass through Bassano, make sure to visit the museum underneath the bar/cafe at one end of the old bridge across the Brenta. Lots of authentic “artifacts” from the war, including a Bianchi infantryman’s bike complete with rack a rifle. One of the stoves there looks like a primitive version of an MSR Whisperer Lite.
