The human back
Does it start to hurt after a bit? Does it get sore? Im going to purchase my first road bike tonight.

As with any new physical activity, you'll get used to it.
Actually, you will feel more grief from your neck, shoulders, and butt tissue. But, all of this goes away withing a week or two.
The same would apply to new participants in basketball, jogging, golf, tennis, racquetball, weight lifting, etc...
Just don't whine when it happens. Understand that it will pass soon.

It helps to have a bike that's the right size, and set up correctly for you and the type of riding you're doing.

Its not bad for you. Fitment is everything, a good fit can take a few hours and cost between 100 - 200 dollars. Make sure you do soem research on where your buying it and make sure they specialize in road bikes.

That is the correct answer to approx 85% of queries on BF.
OP, if you are fitted properly, do some core exercises, and build up gradually you should experience minimal or no back pain.
On the other hand if you are excited about your new bike and go out and do a 100 mile ride expect your back to hurt.

im pretty fit, like i said in the other thread, i am an avid mountain biker. My core is pretty tight, its just that being bent over that much for a few hours just sounds like pain.

I think my bike riding has had a negative effect on my posture. My GF is constantly telling me to straighten up and fly right.

I have arthritis in my lower back and have had episodes of serious sciatica pain. I have never had an issue with my back since I got into road biking. I think biking helps my back issues.

Fit is a start but there's other considerations. If you have a physical imbalance or your technique needs work for instance. On most rides I just go out and hammer, 8% below FTP to 15% above, so I can get lower back issues but it's usually gone in a few hours. If it lasts until the next day I take a day off but that's very rare. GL
