In another thread, someone said
"i'm happy fixed as a fad is dying, parts are getting cheaper and cheaper by the week."
I'm not suggesting that...just interested in what other types of riding you'd like to do.

I think some of it depends on what are your riding goals or what you think is fun.
Personally, I have dabbled in BMX, MTB, Road, Cyclocross, Fixed, not in any particular order. Once you are hooked on riding, it is really about just buying the right tool (ie bike) to be able to ride in different ways.

Its seems to me fixed as a fad is growing! But that is besides the point.
I started out riding fixed, but now I am mostly interested in utility bikes. Porteurs and 650b conversions in particular.

Outside of fixed gear riding I enjoy
• riding a hybrid on the local MUP's.
• riding my tandem with my wife.
• building (and hopefully soon riding) my newest 8-speed IGH longer distance bike.
• mountain biking (rarely though, high self preservation instinct)
• riding my fixed gear as a single speed.
I'd love to get a recumbent and/or recumbent tandem but they are expensive and i don't look good with a beard.
I'd also love to try riding a highwheel type bike.

I'm a roadie, but I also do a little CX in the fall. I really need a SSCX. And a TT bike. And a balloon tire cruiser. And a tandem. And a cargo bike. And a folder. And a ______.

I have been planning on touring. I was thinking about using a folding bike for touring, this way I can hop on a train easily. I also ride road, but I like my fixed better. In fact, I sold my road bike.

Dude what is this thread bro I only ride sweet track bike fixies.
For reals. I tried saving up for a road bike, but ended up with another track frame. Derp. Maybe I'll try again starting now. I'm also looking for a tandem to cruise around with.

One of these days we're going to get a velodrome built here. Then I'll buy a track bike. No, check that. I'm going to have Steve Rex build me a track bike.

SS/FG is just a drivetrain choice, not a bike type.
You're either ss/fg or geared. (or fred flinstone style)
On what seems to be the real topic, what type of bike do you move to after you have your tarck bike set up...
I had a geared roadie and a mountain bike before I bought my San Jose, so my ss/fg was bought as a commuter. Low replacement cost, low maintenance, etc. When that got stolen I went fixed with an IRO. Same basic reasons, but wanted fixed for the fun and the workout/exercise angle.
My next bike will probably be a rack/basket bike for shopping runs.[1] I am probably going to build this one geared, since I live at the top of a decent hill. If I lived in the flatland, I would build it SS.
[1]Gas is $4.30 here now for premium.

Since I started started riding fixed 7-8 years ago I've gotten into cyclocross, road, vintage, bike advocacy and countless other things.

I went from BMX bikes in the 80's to MTB's in the 90's. Around 1998 or so I stripped down my MTB because I could not afford new derailuers etc. so it became a single speed. I used to go and watch races at our local velodrome at Morley Field (back when Ken Carpenter would ride there) and fell in love with track bikes early on in my BMX days. After remebering that I had my MTB rear hub converted to fix, I was in pure heaven. I took a 4 year layoff from riding and in 2004 bought another SS MTB, rode it for a year and sold it in order to buy a FG track/road bike. I have never really wanted another type of bike since then. Sorry for the story but I love looking back on my youth, I only wish I still had my redline BMX bike with my skyway mags and redline flight cranks. When I got those cranks I became the coolest kid on the block until my cousin stole it and sold for some weed, my big bro kicked his A$$!

Right now all I have built up is my SSCX and 29er, thought the former is in commuter/road mode with 28s and fenders. I have most of the stuff to build by geared cross bike back up and I also want to rebuild my shogun conversion.

Some part of my wants a really nice road bike. But at the same time I feel any limitations I'm experiencing in daily life are due to my own internal lackings. Not that of my equipment.
I'm more motivated to build a roadie because I know relatively little about geared drive trains and equipment, building one would make me much more informed.
One day i'll do wolfpack Fixed. That's my ultimate goal, then use that as training to get into the kind of shape where I can ALWAYS do wolfpack fixed. Then just keep training until I'm TT or Ken Cox and school youngins by blasting them on 66 GI or busting seated skidz.
