the road peaked at 104 today.
saw 5 burned patches on the Springwater Corridor. 2 from Monday or tuesday and three sometime today as I road it to work this morning. the one by the road still felt and smelled hot.

We had a bunch of that a few years back. There had been a lot of rain for days, followed by high winds. So many trees just toppled over that most of Peoria lost power for a day or two. Boy, if that doesn't make you look at every tree with suspicion, nothing will!

I was doing a bit of bike riding in the hills to the west of St. Louis on Sunday. Wonderful weather... about 85F, which is almost chilly for St. Louis in July!
The route passed through Pacific, MO, which is home to a silica mine. Considering how hazardous silicosis is, I'm amazed that the mine is even in operation. There is an open face in the hillside where the mine is located, which I'm guessing is a former entrance, or maybe just provides ventilation for the mine? There is a chain link fence that separates it from a small park. Rather unusual.
Further down the road is Eureka, MO, the site of a Six Flags amusement park. I would eventually climb up Allenton Road, where you can hear the wooden roller coaster and the accompanying screams of delight. That does add a bit of fun to a hard climb.
But first, I stopped for a quick bike selfie...
Finishing up the ride at Babler Park, I usually worry about getting hit by the numerous deer.
This time, I didn't have to worry about the wildlife suddenly bolting out of the trees and knocking me over...
The park is close to the Missouri River, and it's surprising how many turtles/tortoises are out on the roads. Unfortunately, I've seen a number that didn't get out of the way of cars.

Saw this guy grinding up a climb on the Blue Ridge Parkway a few days ago. I tried to chat but his English wasn’t strong and my German (a German website was painted on the side) is almost non-existent. I said hello, ordered two beers, asked which gate my flight departed from, said thank you and rode on.
If the pic is a little confusing, he had the cockpit fairing in the up position, presumably so he wouldn’t bake himself in the heat.
