Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

More of an all-road than “gravel”

But Leo handled some gravel just fine

Been back and forth on calling this a hybrid or a gravel bike. It has been my winter project to replace my hybrid bike that I will be selling this spring. First ride this past Saturday and am really liking this. First time I have owned a bike without a front suspension since early 90's. I'm liking it!

Thanks I'm starting to get back on the saddle - pun intended. Fork is a Trifox suspension corrected fork w. QR dropouts. Was very limited on my fork options but I now have a rigid and a suspension fork that I can go between (was using an older Manitou fork prior)

Glad you’re feeling better. That’s a good looking fork and it gives you plenty of clearance when things get nasty. I really like the geometry on that Kona and how you have it set up. Looks like it would be blast to ride about anywhere you’d want to take it.

Cheers,

Scott

Klein Rascal that I used for cross country racing back in the 1990s, now with a different handlebar and a mix of components for a more relaxed pace, and maybe some "bikepacking." Old Suntour thumb shifters with friction shifting, 8-speed Shimano cassette with an old Sachs derailleur. V-brake out front with a cantilever in the back (cable routing didn't allow a V-brake in the back). I took this picture last week while riding along the Mississippi River. Still a great bike!

That is a crazy cool bike! I assume those horizontal links on the fork provide some suppleness to the ride besides being attention-getters.

yep, a little like "leaf springs" but not really measurable travel, supposed to absorb the shock of washboards ..... plus it looks cool :-)

I did a few upgrades. I picked a pair of used 29er carbon wheels and used an adapter to convert the front wheel from a 15mm to 12mm thru axle. In the process I opted to put on some fresh rubber! I also install an integrated carbon drop bar.

Looks cool ... and dangerous. Is there any literature on how well they tested it? I know nothing about this stuff, but it makes me nervous.

the blacksheepbikes Instagram page shows he's been building them for years, they're very well tested

Bye bye 1x, hello 2x

OK, so I was never really jiving with the 1x setup on my gravel bike (I love it on my mountain bike though), and kept wishing I had a 2x. When I found a brand new GRX silver groupset for sale at a substantial discount by a local seller, I jumped on it. Since I wanted to make a few other changes to match the groupset, I also purchased some polished silver Arundel cages, a silver Simworks froggy seatpost, a black (w/silver dots) WTB Gravelier saddle (super comfy!), and Ciclovation silver fade bar tape. Also decided to swap out my XT pedals for some LOOK X-track gravel edition tires (cool bronze color). Lastly, I replaced the front tire (a Pirelli Cinturato H) with a Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M (I left the H on the back). One ride in and I'm loving it. IMHO, a 2X just works better on this bike. And going to the Cinturato M on the front has made a huge difference in grip, especially while descending. I wasn't sure if the silver would work with the forest green bike, but I'm actually digging the look. Anyway, thanks for listening, and here are some pics:

After waiting for a year I finally purchased a new bike. This will be both my main gravel bike and main road bike (have a set of separate wheels that will sport 30-32mm file-treads for road duty).
It maybe my quiver killer as I intend to replace two bikes with this one. Did a shakeout ride yesterday in the sun and so far the 1X gearing does not disappoint.

(yes the paint scheme is ridiculous; I love it)

You have seen the light!! Mixing tread patterns to add front end grip is magic, at a very minimal cost in Crr (if you chose wisely).

Yes, I had seen some of your posts and was inspired! The H in front was way too squirrely... Mountain bikers have been doing it forever, so it makes sense on gravel bikes as well.

I'm definitely a believer. I've moved from Pirelli to Tufo, but with the same mixed tread approach (Swampero/Thundero).

Last week, I traded some messages with pro gravel guy, Joe Goettl, who is using Pirelli H tires. I suggested that he might consider running an M up front for added traction in loose conditions. He liked the idea, and said that he would give that a try sometime, but stuck with his H/H setup for BWR AZ last weekend. His race included multiple crashes due to a lack of traction on the dry, sandy, twisty AZ course. After, I asked him if he thought an M on the front would have made a difference. His response..."I totally should have run that tire!"
