My bike shop guy changed the leverage ratio by dropping the cable off the side of the mech arm - looks weird and the mech cable may die sooner, but it works well

Getting my Trek 520 "test-loaded" for first time. Hopefully can get out for some local touring in the upcoming months as COVID restrictions lift. The Ortlieb front rollers are new as well, the MEC panniers I have had for some time.
Didn't get everything loaded but got all the big items except sleeping pad which can go on the back rack too with the tent rods. This is including a relatively warm sleeping bag, small camp chair and a not so compact three-person tent. Even with the relatively luxurious packout the weight isn't terrible.
And in reality I will be travelling with my wife for most occasions so we can divide some of the tent and cooking ware load.

Been happy with this so far. I have a 3L water bladder in the rear seatpack. With Cannondales suspension system it preloads well and really, really dampens any bumps. I'm aiming to use this on 200 mile days, made it to 140 miles so far. Will eventually buy anything cages for the front forks. Arkel 15L rear, Bontrager 1L toptube pack and Ortlieb 6L off the front.
Can't wait to do some overnights as well.

Wiggle How many nights/miles do you go with that?
If I were dropping down to just a couple of nights it would be less clothes, maybe drop the stove too.
There is room for improvement with the sleeping bag, its rated for -5C and is fairly thick compared to a summer only bag. If I were planning to do much solo I would go for a small solo tent as well but most travel will be with my wife so probably not worth it.
I also plan to add a third bottle carrier.

My wife and I had these Tamarack touring bikes built for us around 21 years ago. Built with Reynolds 725 steel by Mark Beaver of Halifax Nova Scotia. We had them re-painted a few years ago and I built new wheels for them and hung new 9 speed XT components. Ready for 20 more years of touring! Photo taken in Summerside, PEI a few summers ago. Heading to Gaspe, Quebec this summer.

Is that a Turbomatic 4 that I see on your bike? I toured PEI with that saddle last summer, and my butt was killing me. I must say that I had a bag on my shoulders, which didn't help. It improved a lot when I got a front rack and wasn't putting any additional weight on there. Anyway, PEI was beautiful!

I have to ask, what is that rectangular shaped thing in both photos?
the bike is one of those pan America's isn't it? With that interestingly designed rear suspension?
read some trip reports by a couple that owned them, years ago though, 7 or 8 maybe. This appears to n be electric also?

Took it out last week for a test of the new panniers. They're MEC 30l WTs. On the rack are tent poles for my large 2 man tent. Front bag is MEC WT handle bar bag. I wanted to see if I could do an effective setup without front bags. Bags were pretty full, but I could easily a) strap my tent to the top of the rack or b) downsize to a one man. I'm pretty happy with this setup.

Bilenky on the Blue Ridge
My venerable Bilenky Midlands posing with some North Carolina mountain laurel from a trip a couple of summers ago. Shortly after this photo was taken, my front derailleur shredded into metallic confetti, weirdest mishap ever.
