Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Military Cyclers

Just trying to get an idea of how many military riders we have here on BF. Also could be a good place to get info for PCSing, TDY's, etc on how the bike scenes are around other bases and parts of the country. I know here, Barksdale AFB, we have a few serious cyclists and some who are into riding but mostly tri. Any other military out there???

Hey, I just voted Guard/Reserve and I'm the first one.

I have several in my guard unit that cycles. One guy and his son, they have really nice road bikes. There is another crew that are pretty hard core MTB'rs.
I of coarse do both.

Does Ex-Navy count? Got out back in 1997. Funny how it just sticks with you for the rest of your life. You just never seem to forget it (the good, and the bad).

I was an 'almost' but didn't quite make it (long story). I have, however, convinced 2 friends (army, navy) of the greatness that is cycling. Does that count?

Army. 1976 to 1982. Good, bad and indifferent, I remember most of it. Where I was stationed in Germany it was not good for cycling. Something about cobblestones and bike tires don't mix well together. I'm glad I made the decision to get out, but I also don't regret a moment of my service time.

Prior AF, got out in 93 when I realized that after Desert Storm, I was going to be doing a 90 day rotation at least once a year. Wife also rides, she's ADAF MSgt.

I was one of the other former AF's. Let me say thanks for serving to all of you. I was at F.E. Warren AFB, Cheyenne, Wyoming and cycling wasn't promoted enough for me to get into it at the time. But, military members are typically up for a challenge, I know I was. So, drag your buddies out there and get them on some skinny tires.

Yeah I am actually getting some guys I work with to ride in a Tour de Goodwill this weekend. They are only doing the 26 mile course but they also have either mtb or comfort bikes. I actually talked 2 of them into buying one for this...

Active Duty Army from Apr 93 (Operation Restore Hope in Somalia 1993-1994) to Oct 2004 (Operation Iraqi Freedom II Jan 04-Oct 04). ETSd in Oct 04, joined the Air National Guard in Apr 05. It is such a difference from the Army.

U.S. Army, HOOOAH!!!! 23+ years. Chief Warrant Officer. Did the fun stops of Panama, Kuwait (via Saudi), Somalia, Afghan and Iraq. I'm on my retirement tour now. Retirement will become official 1 Oct, can't wait. It was fun, real fun. Worked with great soldiers, airmen, Marines, and sailors, not to mention turning a few protein drinks (Miller's a protein drink, right?) with some great coasties. I'll miss it, but hell, someone else needs to have some fun. HOOOAH!!!!

I would just like to chime in here and take a moment to thank each and every one of you who have served, or are currently serving, in the military. While it is a calling that I feel I am not cut out for, I have the deepest respect for those who (honorably) serve the country. My deepest gratitude and thanks.

Former Marine. Although I rode a bicycle as a kid, I got introduced to "serious" cycling while I was in the Corps and have been riding since.

My son is a Marine and bought a bike to ride on his base in Iwakuni, Japan. Unfortunately, it has been parked at a bike rack for months and he's now on a training exercise at Camp Fuji near Tokyo. He says it needs some work before he can ride it again so I'm trying to inspire him to fix it up and get back on. If he gets to come home on recruiters assistant this fall, maybe he'll go riding with me. We haven't seen him since a year ago this week.

USMC '87 to '91. Of all my buddies in boot camp and training I was one of 7 who ended up with the Security Force Battalion here in the states. Lots of good times and some bad and if I had to do it again I would.

I was the only one that I knew of that cycled.
