Subsequent research and testing resulted in the design that was adopted in the US MUTCD. See Part 9 of the MUTCD for more information.

One of the research scenarios was to use a standard bike lane marking in a general-purpose travel lane. An interesting finding was that over half the test subjects said they interpreted it as making the entire lane a preferential bike lane.

I know James well. Some of the first examples of these were installed just north of my house here in Denver.
