New (to me) Bike
This probably will be more interesting to the folks in C&V but I thought you guys might want to see the gem I found the other day. Everything on the bike except tires, chain, and tape is original to it. The frameset is a Merz-design, Toyo-brazed Specialized Allez SE in blue (pretty rare color). The group is Shimano 600 and the cockpit is Specialized-branded which means it might be Nitto.
I'm going to attempt to save what I can after tearing it down for an overhaul. The cables will probably need to be replaced and the tape is definitely gone. Otherwise, it looks to be in really good shape and the price, as they say, was right. It should make a nice second bike...

nice find.
i would personally also spring for some new aero levers which will have newer, more pliable hoods. the cane creek ones are superb, i have them on my ss.

The toughest decision will be to go with a modern saddle and pedals or to keep those pieces period-correct. Since it's not going to be a show bike, I believe that going with what's comfortable and reliable should be the order of the day...

definitely, eff toe clips, and IMO, if you're going to be on the bike for any more than a spin to the liquor store, get the right saddle, otherwise you may never want to ride the bike at all.

Yeah, I agree. I want to be able to take this one out whenever I feel going retro. The aesthetic sensibilities of the older saddle and pedals aside, I don't believe they make sense when it comes to actually riding the bike for exercise or over any decent distance.

New bits have been purchased. Going on it will be a Nitto cockpit that fits me (Mod. 176 bars, Pearl stem, and Dynamic seatpost), Fizik Aliante saddle, Shimano M520 pedals, and Panaracer Pasela TG tires.
