Check to make sure the fork isn't "lockout" equipped, which would switch it from cushy to rigid, depending on riding demands. Also, if that's not the case, some Manitou forks had grease fittings on the back of the lower forks, depending on model and year. Get a needle and put a few pumps of grease into them, and it will possibly save them, and or free them up.,,,,BD

Pics first Believe it to be a 93 GT Berrago. Great yard sale find and one I have been wanting to try, triple triangle or hellenic frame. Feels very light and the Suntour XC pro group looks to be sharp. Love the GT panto's on the fork and top tube, nice touch !Original but needs some overhauling to get it out there.

Q ? Should I use the original bars or go with straight ones. Not too crazy about em
How do you get the stem and fork off. I have released the top bolt and the side bolt on the stem but it doesn't want to seperate from the fork. Thanks for looking.

Take the side bolt completely out and then remove both sides of the clamp mechanism. You might have to gently tap (hit lightly) one or both pieces out to make it happen.

I picked up this 1991 Bianchi Grizzly recently for my wife. She has been a road biker but wanted something more upright. I put 26 x 1.25 road tires on it since it won't be ridden off road at all. It has all Suntour XC Pro components.

Rjhammett, Serious Bianchi griz there. Looks ready for the road from the git-go. How does it ride ? I have the same groupo on the GT I just picked up, have to work on it tho' before I enjoy it.

I think I got a clearer idea of how to proceed. What is holding me up is that the cap is stuck on top of the stem and won't let the stem come up. Don't want to be too harsh with it and risk destroying it.

RS, it(stem) looks to be the original one, it has the GT logo on it, just like the handlebars.

I was working at Fishers Cyclery in Salt Lake City in '94 when we got a special closeout deal on some XC Pro cranksets, complete with chainrings. These were the 74/110 BCD pattern (non-Micro drive). I bought one crankset. I think the price was $40 or so. They were the absolute most beautiful cranksets money could buy. On par with XTR, but the chainrings were 28/38/48 teeth. The rings were as beautiful as the cranks. Wish I'da bought 3 or 4 more..... Coupla years later I traded them for some XC Pro Micro drive cranks which weren't as pretty (not by a long shot) but did have that sweet 20 tooth granny. That Bianchi Grizzly sparked that memory just now..... Wish I still had those cranks. They'd look great on my 85 Peugeot Canyon Express.

It hasn't been on the road yet. The frame is too small for me and my wife is a fair weather rider. The temps have been in the 30s in Minnesota so it will probably be next spring before it hits the road. I got it pretty cheap and it turned out real nice. I am anxious to have her try it.

The rear suspension is pretty modern in its basic design, not that different from a modern giant, just missing a lower linkage (or whatever you call it).

3S: if worse comes to worse tap it from below inside the fork with something long? To answer where it came from, my brother in law used to mtb race apparently and he hooked me up with the frameset/fork. Also, those Scott AT-2 bars on your bike are freaking awesome you should definitely see about getting used to them, if you do you will probably love it.

Cyclo: It is a pretty novel bike for it's age indeed, my friend who's utterly into old proflex's/k2's even finds this bike too bizarre for his tastes but it does everything I want and I'm yet to see someone else with one like it.

I've almost got the stuck AL seat post out of my early 90's Ted Wojcik. Time to start thinking about putting it back together. It has a Rock Shox Mag21 that appears to still be perfectly functional. Anyone have any Mag21 tips or what have you before I put it back to work on the trails?

Well, jumped the gun on crowing about having the headset on my new-to-me GT Borrego apart and I hit another stumble. I need some guidance, please.

This is how far I've gotten. As you can see, it is a Tioga alchemy threadless headset. The black ring above the hs is the rubber cover.The part that nhas the writing on it seems to be plastic and will rotate freely around an inner ring. The inner ring does not move. There does not appear to be any thing to grab hold of an turn it. Anybody with experience with these HS, how do I proceed ?

The fix...... lube that tube and smack it down with a mallet. My kind of fix !

Oh yeah those threadless headsets can be worse than threaded, if the steerer rusts on you. We have a TON of those types of problems, on triathlon bikes. I swear some of those guys sweat battery acid!!,,,,BD

It will be WAY easier to reassemble it, if you find someone with a bench grinder and a wire wheel to clean the rust off. Then lightly lube it before you reassemble.

I've got a BEEFY Manitou aluminum hardtail frame, 1-1/4" headtube. Cracked at the HT though. Maybe FTW can weld it for me one of these days...

1992 Trek 8000 MTB. I put the drop bars on it, it copped the attitude all by itself.
