Don't forget the power cord debates. There are miles of contractor grade power lines running up to and through a house, but you need a $5,500 power cord for the last three feet to your amp if you want to hear good music.

I would disagree with this. And the easiest way to tell the difference between tires is to ride with something like gator skins and move to something else.

Comparing GP5000 to Gatorskin is like comparing a Porsche Boxter to a Jeep Wrangler. They're designed for different purposes. For speed and handling, the GP5000 is one of the best tires available. For durability and long life, the Gatorskin is one of the best tires available. Unfortunately, you cannot simultaneously have indestructible durability and supple speed in the same tire, so you have to choose one priority or the other.

My bike with 30mm Gatorskins feels more comfortable than my bike with 23mm Mich Pro Race 4.

Of course I'm being facetious, I am aware that tire width trumps almost anything as far as comfort goes. I like the Pro Race better than comparable cheap 23's I replaced with them many years ago. On the other hand, I've never felt similar size Gatorskins to be awful.

Gatorskins, much like the Bontrager Hard Case lites are like wrapping a garden house around your wheel.

I run ordinary GPs. Half the price of GP5000 (which I have not tried) but more puncture resistant (per bicyclerollingresistance.com), and in my experience way more comfortable than the Gatorskins at the same width and pressure.

I have a dual 26" Ti recumbent bike. Regular GP is my tire of choice IMHO the best 26" road tire made.

I’m liking the gp 5000 tr’s so far. The roads are pretty messy around here at the moment and no issues to report so far. It’s early days but I’m happy I opted for them.

I originally bought a pair of ordinary GP (no trailing numbers) to use as a pair, but ended up installing one on the rear with a GP 5000 in the front when I found that the two are similarly wide. Ordinary GP are getting hard to find.

Like almost all the opinions on gear on this website, the opinions here are mainly highly subjective. People like certain tires over others. I do, too. But the only thing I can really determine with any accuracy is how many flats I get. On some tires I've ridden, I've gotten no flats at all. On others a few and on some a lot. As to qualities like grip and handling,I wonder how one can determine these qualities. Do people turn corners and the bike slides out from under them and they crash? Softness of ride can be felt, but as some posters have said, inflation has a lot to do with that quality. In the long run, whatever tires a rider uses are really dependent on what that rider likes. I'd like to see some blind tests to determine such qualities as tire performance. I don't think I could tell the difference between the various performance levels is such tests. But that's just me. I imagine some riders are more perceptive than I am. But as far as puncture resistance, your experience will easily tell which tires get fewer punctures.

went on one of my favorite hill rides after a rain. light patches of wet cement and the tires handles beautifully. I wasn't brave enough to go don't the hill at my normal speed, but pretty close to it. Plus I had some cars come up while going down so I had to do some "emergency" braking

Anyway, I really am impressed with these tires. They roll better, have better grip are lighter and just "feel" better than the gatorskins. longevity and flat resistance remain to be seen...

GP5000 - Gatorskin

I believe the GP4S would sit between the GP5000 and the Gatorskin ... ??? ... (in the Continental line)

GP4S should weigh less and roll better than the Gatorskin - but still offer better durability and puncture protection than the GP5000 ... ???

( Ultra Sport is a great low cost alternative to GP5000 - but does not significant increase in durability or puncture protection (if at all ?) )

Yes. I used to run GP4S as a compromise tire. I also liked them for somewhat wet conditions- they are pretty grippy. They are not a performance tire, but they don't have the "hose filled with cement" feel of Gatorskins. In those days, there was no GP5000, and I had such rotten luck with the GP4000s (sidewall cuts) that I had sworn them off too. I love the GP5000s for their performance, and though they also have rather thin side walls, I've been lucky and had no issue after, I dunno, almost 20 k miles running them. (No, not same actual tires for 20 k)
