Fixing old bikes

hi guys

A few of my friends and I (in melbourne, australia) are looking for some old abandoned bikes to fix and polish up (just for the fun of it).

Do you know where in melbourne we can get those old bikes? Could you get them for free?

Cheers
Sing

P/S: I've also posted this qn in the general forum...is it ok with the mods?

I've never been to Australia tansc but here in Canada, on garbage day, there are tonnes (literally) of perfectly sound bikes in the trash. Highly worthwhile taking a stroll the evening before the trashman comes around.
Here seems fine for a post of this nature - you might get more hits in the General area though.
Good luck!

Police auctions are a good place to look as well. Most police departments take in large numbers of confiscated, abandoned, and unclaimed bikes, and get rid of them at auction a couple times a year.

Just a thought: If you have the necessary space, take bikes in lesser condition along with the good bikes. Scrap out the hopeless bikes for parts to use on the others, making it a very low-cost hobby.
