What is a "compliant" ride?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is a "compliant" ride?

I hear people talking about how their bike offers a compliant ride. What does this mean?

Comfortable. Some bikes transmit every little bump from the road to the bars and saddle for differing reasons.

Compliant- The mechanical ability to flex in a vertical plane to absorb road variations and apply a smoother ride.
Not to be confused with lateral stiffness, where you don't want flex.

Take a look at how "the experts" describe the taste of wine. Same goes for those "expert" few who somehow can tell you how a bike rides. I enjoy the ride of old gaspipe french bikes. Very "compliant".

A compliant ride would be how my steel framed '81 Panasonic rides.

A compliant ride would be the opposite of how my Felt TT bike rides.

A complaint ride is when you bring your wife or girlfriend.
