Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've been painting the interior(an odd sort of interior/exterior interior) bit by bit. My vision is not great, as my wife constantly reminds me. One day I'm not getting good enough coverage, and am pulled from the job and the next day I'm back at it. An hour or two per day, before it gets too hot to be out there. Concrete columns with a not perfectly smooth surface is a challenge to get good coverage. Poor vision and all....

Got our usual Wednesday FUN ride in. Weather was warm enough but windier than expected especially on the second half.

At the rest stop, my bike got blown over by the wind. After we started moving, I felt ok but a few minutes later I felt like I was working way harder than I should, got gapped off the back and worked hard enough to get some nausea (signal that FTP exceeded). My friends waited at the next turn, and I asked for 30 seconds to check my bike.

Of course, the rear brake was rubbing, the minor fall must have pushed it off center. I fixed it and had INSTANT super-powers!!

I've opted for an entry level phone this time, just to see if the lack of bells and whistles bothers me. I pick it up Friday, from DHL in Merida. If I didn't pick it up in the city I would wait ten more days for them to get around to bringing it out. The beauty of buying through Amazon is the easy returnability. I wonder how many returns they allow on the same type item.
My concern is that it won't pick up the google maps lady, without whom I could no longer navigate a rapidly expanding city. If it passes that muster, it'll be a go.

Lunch was take-out Bibimbap for me and Mrs datlas. I got the goods and once in the car, eyeballed the food. wut. No gochujang!?! My wife would have my head without that, so I had to walk back to the restaurant (in my kit, obv) and be a Karen and get some gochujang.

Crisis averted.

If you need any encouragement, I am pleased to say my Habanero has been bulletproof (or is it bombproof?) after 12 years and 75k miles. It’s the Saturn of bikes, possibly.

Android. Mediatek G25 chipset. No gyroscope. 64 gig and a 5k ma battery, my two main criteria. And a three finger screenshot, which I just learned about, is a nice thing too.

Possibly. The only problem with that is it's not made out of plastic.

I've been jonesing for Asian food lately, but I need to sneak out for lunch by myself or something - cheap take-out evidently isn't a thing in my area anymore, and paying $50+ to have my picky kids mope over their plates would just annoy me.

They say bulletproof in the song, but at $1500 I have my choice of the Hab or a sweet '96 Saturn

The Pandemic killed the Vietnamese place in the shopping center close to work, leaving me with Mexican or Subway. Or bringing my lunch, which is what I mostly opt for.

So we really try to avoid politics and religion talk on our rides, because even though we share a love for cycling, our P&R is all over the map.

One of the guys has a birthday coming up and plans to do a special ride to celebrate. He does not proselytize, but I am aware that he is LDS (the religion formerly known as Mormon).

Should I :

A. Say “hey, I thought you guys are not allowed to celebrate your birthday!”
B. Offer to buy him a coffee/latte/cappuccino at the cafe after the birthday ride
C. Keep such subversive ideas to myself

I am thinking C is the most mature approach.
