Another question about racks
I just finished a SS conversion of an old road bike I had and I would like to use it to commute on. It doesn't have the holes to mount a rack on the back so I was going to use the P clips. Now my. question is how much weight would these support? I'm planning on useing a set of panniers to carry a change of clothes and my lunch and about 2L of water. I would be gratefull if anyone. has some insight to share.

I carry stuff like that on my p-clipped rack and never had an issue. They seem very strong.
Don't know if they'd handle loaded touring.

i've got the same issue with my redline monocog 29er...no rackmount holes or fender mount holes. I am using p-clips with the rubber wrap, if you know what I mean. Home Depot and Lowes have them. No issues hauling my panniers which weigh 20-40 lbs depending on the day.

I had a old steel road bike and used a 3-point rack, held at the brake bolt. P clips can carry a normal commute load easily.
I had some threaded eyelets brazed (or was it silver soldered) by my LBS, it cost very little and the whole rack assembly was much stiffer.

Thanks to all for the input. Hopefully I can get everything togeather I am hopeing to start commuting sometime this spring, when its a little brighter and warmer at 430am.

You gonna eat that?
I went to use P-clips on an older bike and found they just didn't fit. This was on a multispeed bike, though, not a single speed. When in high gear in the back, the chain rubbed against the P-clip. As long as you have enough clearance there (which with a single speed I would assume you do), you should be okay.
Load carrying capability is not a problem. I have baskets attached with P-clips on my Raleigh and have loaded the bejeebus out of it (gallons of milke and other groceries) with no problems.

Does anybody make a product that goes through the QR skewer on the outside of the dropout that has threaded holes for fenders and racks? It seems that would be easier to mount and unmount than p-clips.

Ok, here's another one. Is it better to run the supports to the seat clamp or use P clips there also? This is the first time I've had to worry about this the last bike I commuted on had all the braize ons I needed but that bike was stolen.

You can use the brake bridge too. Tubus makes racks specifically designed to use the brake bridge. Also, the Delta MegaRack (much less money than Tubus) has a kit to use the brake bridge. I use it on my Surly Pacer.
