Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Readers are mad that this was posted.

People can do whatever they want for their wedding. I really don't care. My issue is, why is this in ALL CAPS?

I didn't even notice the all caps, to be honest. First thing that hit me was: Dress Code... Not that I would dress like a bum for a wedding, but I must assume their acquaintances may not know any better.

I would rather pay 40 than the whatever the traditional vig is nowadays.

If I'm asked to pay to go to a wedding/reception, I'm not going. Tacky.

Interesting. I really want my kids (when the time is right) to go to Vegas and elope, and when they come back we can have a little celebration on the deck/backyard, and I will spring for pizzas and beer for everyone.

I don't think that's realistic, but hope springs eternal.

They will expect a gift as well, so you will not escape the vig.

For our daughter's wedding, the invitation did have a note "Black tie optional" but not the words "Dress Code."

We also let everyone know that kids were not invited. We have a large family with lots of nieces and nephews with young kids. Our daughter did not all those tykes at the wedding or reception. Made for a "grown up" good time.

We actually had a really fun time at the wedding. The prep had its stresses. Glad we did it though.

When we got married, I was the last of 6 to do so, we were 30 years old, and we lived 3000 miles away. We handled the wedding all ourselves and though we sent out invitations to all our family on the East Coast, we let folks know we didn't expect them to fly 3000 miles for it. Mom and Dad, one sister, and a brother and SIL from my side came, and Mrs. GJ's Dad and step mom (her brother already lived out here). So, it cost our folks some plane tickets and hotel rooms, and all they had to do was show up. Of course, they really did yeoman's work organizing things on the day.

Then our respective Moms held receptions for us when we travelled East later that year.

I don’t see anything wrong with saying no kids and “Black Tie Optional” does a really good job of conveying the appropriate attire

I agree with that. The venue would have likely clued me in, but it never hurts to reinforce, in this case. Black Tie Optional is a different level than Business Casual. Especially in this day and age... What is business casual? No pajamas?

I'm old and so I don't go many places anymore, but that means jacket and tie at least, right?

Yeah. I wouldn't have shown up empty handed, but I bet many would have taken it literally. There is no such thing as an inexpensive wedding invitation in the real world.

We all should share one of our wedding pics today, or maybe tomorrow. EVERYBODY has a wedding pic. Should be fun, and no cyclist should have been too overweight back then to share.

When we got married, we did not want our families meddling in our affair, so we did our own wedding on our own terms and on our dime. It was a really good time for us and most people told us it was one of the best weddings they ever attended. It was done on a shoestring but we splurged a little for the food/caterer.

I honestly don't mind if the kids want something slightly fancier, but not any of this over-the-top crap.

Dark suit and tie at a minimum in my mind.

The only real stressor that we had was keeping our daughter in line with the budget. For example, she wanted a pair of $500 heels to wear with her gown. My response was that I've never owned a pair of $500 shoes in my life, much less to wear for just 2 or 3 hours, so she needed to tone it down. She did, and for some things that she really wanted, but we didn't want to pay for, she picked up the tab.

All-in-all it ended up going really well, and she worked with us on hiring trades that were reasonably priced.

I was doing some closet rearranging the other day and tried on my wedding jacket on a whim - it was big on me!

The company we use to process pension applications screwed mine up. Incorrect commencement date despite me telling them repeatedly what the planned commencement date was back when I started the process on 2/1. Also weird was the fact that the application letter is dated 1/18. Dude today could not explain why.

These people appear to work from home. I am starting to wonder if that is (part of) the problem. Lack of focus when outside the office environment. Last year I was talking to a customer service person with some company and I could hear her dog barking in the background. I have also heard at least one baby crying.

For some reason, I cannot like this particular post.

Do you often experience papers blowing off your desk?
