Cheap rubber degrades no matter the storage condition. I had a bike hanging in the garage whose 8 years old tires were crumbling off. On the other hand these are 40 years old tires:

They know how to make them last, they don't wanna.

I know the feeling - I see a set of not-new-at-all tires in a brand and model that I like, and my attitude is "Let's see how many miles I can get out of th... hmmm, that bulge doesn't look right."

Sorry 'bout that. Such a bummer. We used to call that brand Wobler.
My indoor closet houses some NOS Clement Criteriums. Italian made versions.
So far, they do not exhibit any degradation. Kept on rims and occasionally inflated.

Even if they hadn't looked bad , I would be very cautious about riding old tires . I got a blow out on a bike that had old tires , but they looked fine! Scared the crap outa me. I would only use old tires for display or low pressure test rides.

I had two blowouts this summer on tires that looked fine. One was while I was riding. The blowout was right in the middle of the tread, it sounded like a gunshot. The other, I found flat in the garage when I went to move a bike. It also had suffered a catastrophic failure in the tread area. In both cases, I also discarded the other tire from the pair. No sense taking a chance when you already had evidence of imminent failure.

Well you got me. I read the title in Yoda voice, "Invulnerable . . . my A55". Based on your previous posts, I opened this expecting to see some rare C&V part that was particularly well made and robust. I was expecting something along the lines of "unlike the A53, the A55 was nearly bulletproof, better engineered and more robustly fabricated" Now I feel like an A fifty five!

30+ year old "NOS" tires = tires for wall hanger bikes, at best.......
I suspect that the one that is in better shape will start getting the same crsaying ND splitting on its tread, soon enough.
The latex skkin on the sidewalls will also crack and turn into dust, leaving the carcass threads exposed and weakend so that the sidewall would blow out. Ask me how I know....

nothing (necessarily) to do with age, although old tubulars either are amazing, or...garbage.
But I bought a pair of these Wolber "invulnerables" NEW back in the '80s and got about 80 miles down Highway One when first one then the other blew out, NOT because of hitting glass, thorns or nails. The "invulnerable" metal mesh worked it's way out of the casing and the tire was toast. Then the second one did the same.

I never bought another Wolber tire after that.

Garbage: new or old.

As I recall, the Wobbler Wolber Invulnerables did not have the best reputation back then, and your comment on the migratory mesh brought it back to my memory.

That squares with my memory of Wolbers in general.

At my level of riding ability, there is zero advantage to riding tubs, although all the old disadvantages are still there. (In my teen years when I had delusions of racing for about 15 minutes, I patched my share of sew-ups and then some. Fun memories - NOT.) These days, tubulars make sense for some folks, and more power to them, but not for me.

This kind of reminds me of the not-nearly-as-old Maxxis Re-Fuse tire. I bought a set and I don't remember how long it took, but not very long before the tread started flaking off.

refuse, noun: matter thrown away or rejected as worthless; trash.
