Dura-Ace bar ends shifters. Install with levers on outside or facing the inside?

Levers should go on the outside, or inside? I have seen bar ends mounted both ways. Does it matter if the lever part is to the inside of the drop bar, or on the outside?

Scratching head here as I've been using bar-ends for some years. The lever action is vertical, not left/right, or am I missing something in your question? Levers typically operate from a position parallel to the drops to 90 degrees down (ie pointing towards the ground).

Sorry, I thought I might not have been clear.

Yes, levers go up -n- down for shifting.
Install pods so that lever can be seen from the inside of the bike, like this :
https://www.rivbike.com/product-p/sh1no.htm

or the outside:

Inside, otherwise you would be shifting the rear derailer on the left hand.

That's what I would think, but the bike I am buying (hasn't arrived yet) had mustache bars and the guy had the on the outside. I am putting on drop bars when it comes, and was wondering about this. I would like them on the inside. If they work that way, I'll do it.

Assuming you are speaking of modern Dura-ace shifters, there are left and right shifters. The left shifter is fricton only for shifting the front, the right is friction/indexed for shifting the rear. The levers go on the inside.

So I wonder how the guy got them on the outside? I can think of a few possible ways:

1) Just swap sides - put the rear shifter on the left and front on the right
2) Swap sides but cable the front shifter to the rear derailer and the put the rear shifter in friction mode and cable it to the front derailer (although Dura-Ace SL-BS79 10-speed bar-end shifter does not have friction mode even though earlier models do)
3) Just rotate by 180. Levers would point up but that might work on mustache bars?

PS I thought for sure this post would be about mounting bar-ends on aero bars since there you do have a choice.

Yes, this is traditionally how it is done. Matches the standard operation of modern control levers too, with the left controlling the FD, and the right the RD.

However, if you have some personal reason for reversing operation, and it works for your situation, then who am I to point fingers? However, kindly warn anyone that might borrow your rig.

RE 9 speed aka,Dura-Ace, bar end shift levers,
the index rear has to go on the right bar,
the friction front goes on the left..

Installation flyer is included..

[put on friction lever for the rear, too, and it is interchangeable]

Those are friction levers and can be interchanged.

If you read the shimano instructions, you'll see that the levers are on the inside.
But I think some manufacturers put them on the outside.

You can't install shimano bar end shifters upside down either, or you'll be putting your hands on a mighty uncomfortable wedge.

+1. It makes no functional difference with the Silver bar-end shifters. If you want to conform to "standards" invented by Shimano at the beginning of the index era, mount them so the pods are on the outside. If you want to be a rebel and freak out your friends and neighbors, mount them on the inside. The bike won't care.

In two posts up you can see how the shifters are installed either way. I guess I will see how they work when I get my hands on them and install them the best way I can.
