What is a fair value for this used Trek Checkpoint ALR5 2021?
Hello all,
I am looking at buying a used Trek Checkpoint ALR5 2021 model year bike local to me (local pick-up). The bike retailed new for 2300 EUR at the time.
The seller bought it in late 2020. So it is just over a year old and looks in really good condition (almost new). It supposedly comes with the original purchase receipt and warranty.
The seller is asking 2000 EUR, which I believe is too high. For that little savings, why would someone take the risk buying used? What would be a fair price for a very good condition used bike like this? I was thinking around 1700 EUR sounds more reasonable?
Thanks!

Secondary market value is going to vary. All you can only throw your offer out there - if the seller doesn't accept, they don't accept. Also, don't take the seller's word for it on the warranty transfer - check with Trek. Maybe things have changed recently, but in the US, at least, the Trek warranty only applied to the original buyer.
Edit: warranty for the US (my bolding)-
These days, availability could be a the overriding factor.

Value is what you are willing to pay for it.
If there are 5 available on the local shop's floor, then you have some pretty good negotiating room. If there are none, and there are 5 buyers lined up to but the used one, then not so much.
Being an aluminum bike, it should be fairly easy to tell if it has had any damage - look for dents, hairline or larger cracks in the paint, especially around the head, bottom bracket and other places where there is welding.
It's a nice bike. Rented one for a day last spring, and really enjoyed riding it. Good luck!

It's worth what you are willing to pay. For me that's 60% MSRP the day it rolls out of the shop door and less every year after that. Needless to say, I don't own very many bikes I didn't buy new myself.

You are absolutely right, it depends on the market, availability, etc. I regularly see almost new gravel bikes being sold in my area for about 70% of the retail value, which in this case would be 1600 EUR. That seems pretty fair to me.
Availability of bikes has been very bad indeed. But I can still find similar new bikes in my area for about 1900 EUR, so I am definitely not paying that, or I would just get something new.
Thanks!

I have a 2021 ALR5. Great Bike. I picked it up May 2021.
The new model, which has some improvements, has gone up from $2199US to $2429US. And reportably the dealers are taking orders for late 2022 or early 2023 delivery.
If I were to sell mine, I would ask around $2000US. And an offer of $1700US would be politely declined. Supply and demand.

Happy to report the seller accepted my offer of 1650 EUR, which I think was a fair price. Bike looks brand new, not a scratch on it.
Just thought I would share in case people are interested what these end up selling for in European market.
