Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wow! A lot of beautiful, vintage road bikes here! One of these days I will restore my first bike - a 70's Peugeot.

But for now, here is my new (to me) Lemond Croix de Fer:

I ride an old school Trek 470 seven speed. Just finished my first century on it at a reasonable time. It's seen many miles though, and the frame is bent from a crash earlier this year, so it's about to get replaced. No recent pictures of it.

Totally unrelated, I found an awesome heavy metal song that I listen to before a hard ride to get pumped up. It's by this crazy metal band Manowar (aka: "The Loudest Band on Earth") called Call to Arms.
a lyric: "Fight For The Kingdom Bound For Glory; Armed With A Heart Of Steel; I Swear By The Brothers Who Stand Before Me; To No Man Shall I Kneel; Their Blood Is Upon My Steel; Blood Is Upon My Steel."
https://www.manowar.com/lyrics_wotw.html

It's about steel. Steel!.

Nice bike! I have a Sarthe same frame different group. Have you weight your Croix de Fer? I was wondering how much difference the group made in the weight. Ether way it's a sweet ride.

It came out to 20.6lbs with everything you see above, minus the waterbottle. It is a super smooth ride! Although the Select wheels don't spin up as smoothly as the racelites.

Edit: Is your Sarthe the orange one? Pics please!!

I own the blue one. It weighs out at 20.5lbs with a mix of Ultergra/105 and "Race" wheelset. I love the feel of OX frame. I have a Giant OCR Alliance (aluminum/carbon) frame that never gets ridden since I bought the Sarthe.

My 1982 Trek 614 - 61 cm

This is my first of many Ebay finds. It’s a very nice handling sport-touring bike and has become my winter/wet weather ride.

Steel

Here is my new Marinoni Piuma (custom geometry). First steel bike, only my second road bike (first was an aluminum giant). It's night-and-day (all positive) compared to the giant. After a 2 hour ride my hands, arms, neck and shoulders felt like I hadn't gone for a ride...didn't know it could be that way.

I apologize for these lousy pictures, but they will have to do until I get out the "big dog" and take some worthy pictures. This was with my camera phone on a quick ride after work up to Vasona Lake in Los Gatos, CA. This is after I installed the new black tires, 1" quill to 1 1/8" threadless adapter, new stem and new Specialized bars. I think it looks much better now and the bars are very comfy. Oh, and it's a 1993 Allez with CrMo fork.

Mine is a 1985 Marinoni Special made from Columbus SL with Campy Nuovo Record. Its original colour was a metallic pink, but it has been back for a repaint.

I look forward to seeing your pics. They're still making great bikes.

My steel bikes...

Built this one last year with a MAPP torch and really primitive "jigs."

Bought this a few years ago and loved it! Full DA group including hubs and seat post. Just sold it though... a little too big for me.

This frame sat in my cousin's garage for years... built it up single speed with some cheapo parts. I like the look.

Some time ago, I posted a picture of my 1985 Trek. Here's my 1987 Bridgestone 450. Sorry for the shadows.

And here's a picture of my 1993 Bianchi Europa
