Second Life Bikes - Asbury Park NJ

Anybody have experience with this place? I was thinking of volunteering there.

I've volunteered there off and on over the years (mostly during the Christmas season prepping bicycles for donation). The woman who runs it, Kerri, does quite a bit for the local community, including helping run the local NICA chapter.

What would you want to know about them? The bicycles are typical fare for co-ops, mostly cheaper kid bikes, lots of cheap cruisers, bike boom 3/10 speeds, and the occasional nicer old road bikes.

It just sounded like a nice place to contribute my time, and you seem to confirm that. Thanks!

Just make sure you park on Springwood. There's no parking on Main, and if you park over near the lake, the fees are exorbitant. Sometimes you can get away with the train lot without paying, but you'll be playing with fire. They have a parking app for AP, now, which is nice, if you do park in a numbered space.

The food at the shop in the back is excellent, by the way.

I've picked up lots of good parts there, and an old three speed that is on the long term to do list. I've gifted them a bunch of parts too. Since when can you not park at the train station?

You can park there, but the spaces are numbered. The city occasionally goes on a ticketing blitz... But usually only during the summer.

I stop by frequently and donate my money on spare parts goodies and a coffee next door. A few pics from my last visit.

Both Campy derailleurs came in handy on my winter projects.

MOGO is a good stop if you like Korean Fusion, by the way. More than a few good restaurants there, actually, but they're a consistent go-to, for me. They have a unit on the Boardwalk during the summer that serves only tacos, too, if you want to people watch.

The Boardwalk before 9 or so on a weekend is great, up from Avon. Nice calf-massage on the legs for skinny-tire bikes.

I occasionally tune their piano for them gratis, but was too busy this year (first whole year post-recovery from broken back), so if you see someone sitting in front of it with the case open, say, "hi"!-

(I remember seeing that pink handlebar/stem there @Vonruden )

I surf in Asbury all the time. Love MOGO, both the boardwalk place and the one in-town. I will say hello if I see you. Ditto if you see a guy surfing in a lime-green kayak.

Not to digress, some photos of my Asbury Park, Steel rides (my typical Saturday morning ride from Brick).

Great pics. Classic AP.
Just around the corner in Loch Arbour/Deal is another great eatery - Cravings Bakery. All their stuff is great.

There is something a little distopian about a beach town in winter.

Maybe, but it's also nice when it's not jam packed with people. AP is better than some of the other towns, in that there is actually stuff to do after the tourist season.

Never felt that way. Quieter, but there is usually something going on. Folks walking and biking the beach and boardwalk, a few surfers. And even when it's empty, I love it.

Good to know, VR. Worth posting in the Regional forums?

Real nice pics, too. Thanks.

Don't get me wrong, I like beach towns in winter. There is just a weird feeling about a town built to accommodate a few hundred thousand people with a winter population of a few thousand.
