Neither C or V: An old Costco bike
Yup a Costco mountain bike. Just finished bar wrapping this gem of the PNW: 1992 Skykomish Marble Point. Whopping Before weight at 37 (THREE-SEVEN) pounds. Dropped to 25.8 lbs just converting to singlespeed. Old comfort saddle and seatpost weighed 4 lbs alone. Could shed even more weight going fixed gear and losing all the brakes but I’m too old for that nonsense.

Love the spiderweb paint. What was the original running gear? I’m guessing it isn’t a full ChroMo frame.

Shimano 200GS fd/rd, 3x7 biopace rings, underbar STI shifters. Not familiar with 200GS but seems decent entry level?
Frame sticker is Tange 5 grade on seat tube but as someone else pointed out, the sticker is marketing bait that really only indicates that the tube is Tange and the rest could be anything. Probably gas pipe grade. The frame w/o fork weighed 7 lbs so I also doubt the whole frame is Tange.

Wilbur76 yeah that's an interesting trick. I remember the Univega sales rep explaining that, as they used to have this CHromoly script on the DT and he said only that tube needs to be CHroMo. Bike sellers are such cheapskates!!! LOL
Yeah IIRC GS 200 was right around '90 and more or less replaced the Light Action SIS level drive.

Costco….I thought Skykomish was a short-lived company but now I know why I see a fair amount of those bikes on CL, FB Marketplace. I wonder if a Kirkland decal set is available? 🤣

As a PNW thrift rat, these used to be everywhere. I'm pretty sure they were only sold at Costco, after they carried Dorado at some point beforehand. I have seen a higher level model as well with 7spd LX and I'm assuming a nicer frame. The model equipped with 200gs was a "price point" bike, I think $199 new.

It does look like a lot of bike for the money and Wilbur’s mods look great.

Thanks for the kind words! I really appreciate your comments and insights. Yeah I’m usually not into picking up big box store bikes and usually try to get old bike shop bikes with some pedigree but couldn’t resist the geometry and that sweet paintjob.
Lol as an aside, I took it out for a maiden ride to take these pics and I panicked a little because I couldn’t feel the brake levers coming up to a busy traffic stop. Sheesh I forgot I installed them way inboard for that SS look. Overall this heavy bike rides nice and solid.
