I just got this Turquoise T700 a couple of weeks ago and was loving it until I skidded on some wet leaves and crunched my shoulder. Still loving it actually, but can't ride at the moment.

I say stealth T1000 because per the 1993 catalog all of the components that match one of the two models match the T1000. Except that it has a 13-28 cassette rather than the 13-30 and has an XTR rear derailleur rather than a Deore XT (T1000) or LX (T700). Otherwise it's all Deore XT with Ritchey Logic crankset and Nitto 55FA bars and Technomic stem with Wolber wheels and CODA cantilevers.

Great fun to ride and I put almost 600 miles on it in the 14 days I was riding it and I'm really looking forward to getting back on.

Sorry to hear about the crash, heal up quick. You’ll be able to post pictures after 10 posts, and you should. Everyone like pictures. The Cannondale touring bikes are great. I had an 87 st400 that I sold after replacing it with a 99 t1000.

'92 T600
'92 Cannondale T600 that I built up from just the frame using a variety of parts. Drivetrain is XT, CR18 rims, Brakes Tektro 720, Dura Ace 9 barends, Tubus rear rack. Works great for around town and should be good for touring as well.

Thanks. The shoulder is still pretty much non-functional. Slowly coming around though and at this point I'm just hoping I don't need surgery in the end. And really missing my daily bike rides. I like pictures, too, so I'll work on getting my post count up to 10.

Nice. I like the way you got a car to match your bike color. Looks like a quality build there.

If I could ask, what is a the purpose of the, for want of a better word, dent in the chainstay? They show that in the '93 catalog as well, but mine doesn't have that. It has an extra piece of aluminum about 8.5" long laid over the top third or half of the stay. And if I'm reading the date code correctly mine was built in March of '93.

It' has been quite a few years since I've ridden a rode bike. My other bike is a Trek 7700 Multitrack. I seem to be adapting to it fairly well. It's a 23" and may be borderline large for me at a shade under 6'. I'm kind of torn between keeping it original or going to a 9 speed setup. I'm not very strong on hills and the wide range on the Trek can be necessary for me at times. Which brings me to my question. On the rear derailleur it says 32T Max, which I understand, and then 33T Total. What does the 33T Total mean?

Dent in the chainstay is to allow clearance for the pedal end of the crank arm. The aluminum tubes are larger in diameter than steel & I guess depending on the crankset & bb spindle width some need it. Don’t know why some would have it others not. My ‘87 had them and the ‘99 does not.

I gather 33 is the total chain wrap capacity of that derailleur, or at least the stated one.

Total capacity of a rear derailleur is (big ring - small ring) + ( big cog - small cog). This can usually be exceeded by a tooth or two, especially if one avoids the big / big combo.

The ultimate stealth T1000 would be built with T1000-or-better parts on an H300 hybrid frameset. All of the early 90s Cannondale touring and hybrid bikes used the same frame and fork, but the hybrid bikes are often thought to be junkers and can be had for small coin.

The car belongs to one of my house-mates the matching is coincidence completely.

The dent I would imagine is there for clearance of the crank arm the only reason I can think of.

The 33 total is the adding of the difference in the sizes of the chain rings and the smallest and largest cassette cogs. Example: (52-39)+(32-12)= 33

Thanks for the info, folks. If I did my arithmetic correctly mine works out to 37, which is well over the 33. But I can attest that it shifts and drives well on the big-big combo. I do try to stay away from that combo, but sometimes I'm shift lazy. I was thinking the XTR and cassette were later additions to the bike because of the 900 numbering on the derailleur vs the 700 numbering on the Deore XT stuff, but I see now that they were contemporaneous. So I wonder if this was originally spec'd by the buyer?

I think you need to make a deal with your housemate. The car and bike look like they were made to go together.

No way, both my VWs would be highly insulted, especially the 2019 Alltrack.

I take it Cannondale was very strict on their model/color policy? Going through the 1993 catalog scan all of the parts on this T700 match the T1000 spec except the saddle, which was gone, the pedals, which didn't match either model, the headset and bottom bracket, which I haven't seen the part numbers on. Oh, and the rear derailleur, which was an upgrade. It also has a lugged fork, which the catalog photo seems to show on the T1000, and not the unicrown shown on the T700. But they couldn't change the decal?

You know... the more I think about this, the more I'm thinking "warranty replacement frame." I think I remember Cannondale doing exactly this, back when I worked at a Cannondale shop. Our Cannondale warranty customers often got better frames than the ones they broke.

According to the catalog the frames of the T1000 and T700 were the same, except for color. The forks are both described only as Tange all CR-Mo, but was unicrown on the T700 and lugged on the T1000. I have to say I like the sound of that warranty.

Fantastic bike, I wouldn't change a thing. That Logic crank is gangster.

Buy a spare derailleur hanger right away, while you can. Gods below only know if you'll be able to get one in 10 years without a trip to a local machine shop. Older Cannondale touring frames are about as good as it ever got, or ever will get. Treat it well and put it in your will... your grandkids will thank you, because it'll still be an awesome bike.
