Thanks for all,of the advice on the rack v backpack thread. I'm going to turn a resprayed 80s steel frame into. Y commuter...it uses a quill stem and has nomeyelts. I have a 9spped set up with flat bar shifters for it. I could use and would appreciate some advice on a stem and ppbar choice to get myself more upright. I have a sturdy wheelset,,ant the frame will take 28's or 32's. Fenders not needed, but a rack via axle bolts or p-clamps is the way I want to go. I already have the drivetrain and brakes, and a few good flasher lights, but advice on what I've forgotten would be helpful, too. I'm going to be riding about 12 miles each way, all on roads or wel paved bike trails.

But the frame is for 6 or 7 speed wheels have to cram a wider hub in there, for 9.

I'd just go with friction thumbshifters
then the FD and Rear D choices can Be 'whatever'. but do what you want..

I'm suffering from a quickly written, inartful opening post. Let me add to it:

The frame I have to use already was set to accept a wider wheel/hub and will fit the 9speed set-up. That was done before I got it, and verified alignment was done when I had it repainted. What I am missing to make this build-out is a trustworthy rack for on-axle or p-clamp attachment, a good quill stem with a high angle, and a set of bars that are not drops.
