1982 suntour cyclone Mark 2 rear derailleur issue
Hi
I found out there is no tension on the RD.
The coiled metal circle creating the tension is broken or unattached.
Can this be fixed, or do I need a new derailleur?
Appreciate any and all help

Even back in the day, spare parts were tough, there was a minimum purchase.
Look for a similar bodied Mech, or just a replacement in toto.

You cage tension spring is broken. I've never replaced that type, which is difficult to remove. This version of the Cyclone isn't that expensive. You can sometimes find them at a good co-op for under $10.

If it were still 1982 you could pretty easily source a spring, not so much today. Best option today is either replace, or find a parts donor. Can't think the time required to find/obtain/dissect a donor would be worthwhile dollar-wise, but if you like tinkering, it's tinker-ful.

It's the best reason to pull apart a Suntour derailleur after a couple of years of all weather riding. Water gets inside and the spring rusts. It may take years but they will fail.

facing the exact same problem - and now that i have a donor, any pointers on how this particular type of spring can be prised out?
edit: solved... copious penetrant, and then used fragments of the broken old spring as a tool to dig down into and under the replacement spring, making it pop out ... eventually

Glad that the OP is getting some help on the issue. I know I've seen people discuss this same spring failure on the C&V group in the past.
and if it is any consolation, the first generation Cyclone derailleurs had springs break too, even though they were a different design. Here's a photo of one of mine...
I really only use SunTour derailleurs on my bikes with a ton of miles, so I haven't abused my Campy or Shimano or SRAM derailleurs. Do they have similar spring failures??

(hopefully one of my old Campy Nuovo Records won't break on my next ride)

I have a Mark II that I mangled the cable bolt on. I could take it apart if you need the spring from it. I put my Allen wrench in it crooked when tightening the screw onto the cable and rounded it out. The rest of it is fine, but does have some rust on a couple pieces. Condition of the spring is unknown but it's still springy.

I've fixed that problem twice now. One Cyclone broken as purchased and the other broke just 5 miles from the car. Both RDs have been serving mankind faithfully for years now. Search C&V via Google. There are threads here somewhere.
