ID a vintage person.
I used to go to a lot of MTB races and trade shows. I also met a lot of people. I am really not much of a "take a photo of me and this dude" sort of guy with my own camera. It does happen sometimes but not a lot.
I asked someone to take this photo of the man on the right and myself with my camera. Can you tell me who he is?
It was on a roll with some Norcal races in '86 or so.
Thanks.

Frank,
He looks as if he is a retired USSR cosmonaut. Maybe he had defected?

Frank he looks a lot like a guy I met several years back at my oldest daughter's wedding in Napa. I seem to recall the following; his name was Paul, he was French, he was firmly convinced a guy in his 70's was irresistible to all young girls in attendance, he had sailed in the America's Cup several times, perhaps on a winner and maintained a Cup website when I met him, he lives in Truckee, keeps a sailboat on Lake Tahoe and has persuaded the management of the Squeeze In in downtown Truckee--excellent breakfast BTW--to hang mementos of his exploits alongside all the famous skiers and mtb racers.

I had been making bike frames for several years before I knew there was "bike industry" with trade shows etc. I was totally naive and blown away when I realized what was going on and that was only because my employer was "socially conscious" in the business sense and my co-workers were experienced cyclists. I have only a handful of photos of me and someone else and I know all the other people.
I would be the kind of person to think "I got a photo of myself with XYZ, holy cow" and then forget for 30 years. It could be my uncle also or really, anyone.

This guy today would have to be in his 80's at least.
And I'm kinda hoping he isn't tuned into this thread.
But I guess he might think that it's funny...

Pliny the Elder was the guy who said "Fortune favors the brave." (As he ordered his helmsman to steer toward Mt. Vesuvius, which was erupting at the time.) An asthmatic, he died in the ashfall at the site of what we know of as Herculanium, trying to save his friends. Good man, good beer.

The guy with the odd shirt must be someone's coach I guess, and the pic was taken at a 1980's mtb race?
