Love Owen Mulholland's story about the Bisbee race! Neat to hear about Greg LeMond's dad, as well as how Greg really dominated the competition! It was just a hint as to his future accomplishments!

Many thanks for posting these, I do really enjoy re-reading them all these years later.
On my first bike camping trip, I was riding an overloaded Royce-Union "gas pipe special". My gear was in the full-fledged backpack I was carrying (not panniers). Larger camping items were strapped to a Pletscher rear rack, including a massive canvas Boy Scouts tent.
My rear wheel self-destructed hundreds of miles from home with no tools to fix it nor money to pay for repairs. I was very disappointed, to say the least. I had to make a call home and my sister and her boyfriend were nice enough to drive up and bring me home.
I saved every penny I made until I could buy a decent bicycle.

Was anyone else thinking, "hey, there's finally a good use for that jutting ulna from my wreck"?

A bone is not the only option, though. I think the usual alternative was a smooth piece of plastic, such as a toothbrush handle (before the days of electric toothbrushes).
The process does work pretty well, though. I've used it on Brooks saddles as well as boots.

Thank you. I had never heard of boning leather. After researching, I discovered using a hot spoon can be used. So, we can bone and spoon in a new context...LOL!!

When I was in the Marines, it was common to scuff one's boots. The use of a bone to smooth the leather was the advice written in one of the guide books about uniform maintenance. The procedure was called "boning", which I think would produce a lot of snickers among today's young Marines.
A bone is not the only option, though. I think the usual alternative was a smooth piece of plastic, such as a toothbrush handle (before the days of electric toothbrushes).
The process does work pretty well, though. I've used it on Brooks saddles as well as boots.

Love that the C&V BF has a few marines that are avid cyclists.

Love these old Bicycling Magazine scans!
The woman on the cover is San Diego's Yvonne Perez. The photo is from one of Bonnie Wong's tours. Yvonne was s good friend and stoked my tandem many times in the '70s. On the tandem, the one word she said the most was "FASTER!".
