The weather is unseasonably warm in central Iowa so it's time to get my '79 Trek 510 fixed up. I flatted last last year and finally got around to replacing the tube. I checked all the adjustments as well. The bike is likely due for an overhaul this year. Using this unplanned sick day to catch up on some cycling stuff. Finally got around to putting the 35mm Bora Ultra's I bought in the fall on the C40. Used the same tires and latex tubes I had on it. Only change were he brake pads, wheels, and skewers. Much respect to the old alloy gold Shamal Ultra's I had on it. After the changes the bike was only 1 oz lighter, 16 lbs 12 ozs.



The gold Shamals will go on the white Olmo eventually. They should look good on there with the gold lined decals. But first I need to find a builder I can send the fork to for some alignment work. It has never been right and was beyond the comfort level of my LBS to deal with.




Next up today is the Krapf bike, need to swap out the old Dura Ace rings on it for the NOS Superbe ones I got for it. But first I think I need a nap....

I picked up my son’s Super Course for a checkup. It was mostly ok but the headset was showing signs of brinelling so I rotated the frame cup and fork race and it smoothed out. Did a bit of fussing with the brakes, gave him a wider range freewheel, new chain, and swapped out a Shimano Seven derailleur for a Suntour something or other that I had pulled out of the Box o’ Crap. It runs much quieter now. Finished it off with a bit of bling, a set of SKS shorty fenders, also from the BOC. I can’t help but wonder if I installed them in the proper orientation?

Torpado I am working on is nearly ready to put back together. I am going cheap as I see no future in it for me. Even though the original tires had very little wear on them, I got some others from the co-op for $4 each that are maybe only 20 years old vs 40. Going black on the cables vs the stock white ones as the frame has black accents. For now I won’t have any brake hoods as these Universal levers are hard to get hoods for. Pics when I get done. Perhaps I can dredge up the before and after thread. It is coming out pretty nice and that thread needs revived.

@sd5782, I have a special affection for mid-range bikes like that Torpado. Once you get it working right, I suggest you take at least a short ride on it to appreciate the ride, even if it's not your speed.

Be sure the stem is inserted adequately; it looks too high. And be sure it's clamped onto the handlebar well.

@ascherer, I'm chuckling at those shorty fenders. There's probably no wrong orientation. Other than that, nice work on that bike. What does he say about the bike in general?

Oh yes, I plan on riding it a bit to get the flavor of it at least. Perhaps I will have it around for awhile for a few rides a year. I believe the stem was actually inserted at the limit mark. It’s no Technomic, but a wee bit longer than some. The clamp bolt to the handlebar is one of the few fasteners that I haven’t touched yet. Fun starts with building it back up after all the cleaning I did.

I just sprayed a coat of flat black on the high quality but unknown builder fixie/ single speed frame I got from the Bike Exchange as a pile of rust. A couple hours sanding with a palm sander and 320 grit cleaned off most of the rust . A little sand blasting got into the corners.

For a paint scheme I am going to try for a CalvIn and Hobbes tribute. I have ordered some Vinal decal / stickers from Red bubble and my plan is to put them in various spots then spray over everything with matt clear.
For a wheel set I have one set of black aero wheels

I also have a set of mavic ma 40's which a fellow volunteer laced up for me. The rear is an SA 3 speed hub with coaster brake. I might put them on this bike but I also have a Raleigh Supercourse frame which I would like to dress up as a 3 speed Lenton Grand Prix which I have an almost complete set of decals for.

I would encourage comments as to whether this is o/k. I don't want to miss lead anyone. I just like the idea of a light weight vintage 3 speed "Club Bike". Really though, it would be a custom bike, not an exact replica.

Anyone know where I can get 19 inch Zefal toe straps? My wide feet with large toe box shoes are to big for the standard length.

Almost done building it up to sell, but now contemplating modernizing it and keeping the group set for another frame.

And the stem is something I had hoped to not mess with, but not to be. Perhaps you noticed and that is why you mentioned stem to bar tightness. The knurled nut is perhaps the wrong nut, and was not seated well. Careful inspection showed a crack there probably from someone trying to crank it down and the wrong diameter nut cracked the clamp area. Nearly invisible and bars were tight, but I will put on a scratched up Cinelli for now.

Lots of happy wrench for my time lately.

The Obrien repaint had a Cyclone group, which performed solid, but had a 120 or so stem that I just could not get comfortable with. The cyclone was taken off and put to a Club Fuji a number of years ago. The frame has set unused about four years since the Fuji was sold right before “the lockdown”. I call this my Ultegra build, 2x9 with xt rear and Dura Ace front derailers. A campy Veloce double crank with campy cartridge bb adorn with Ultegra chain rings. A couple of years ago I laced up some Ultegra wheels on hi polish rims, however my nds rear spokes were calculated shorter than spec. That wheel needs a rebuild. Presently the Obrien is rolling on a beat up set of wienman rims and very nice DA 7700 hubs.

The polished wheels I have decided need to go to the blue Evans. The blue bike has the blues. I got the thing all together and I see the frame is Ted Nugent, Wango Tango, lol 😤! It needs a Chubby Checker correction.

Here are those two wrapless wonders.

That was last week. The Obrien will get burgundy tape, and the F.W. will probably get white Fisik wrap. Note the Obrien got a flat on the test ride, ah dangit.

This week the flaming red hot Falcon from the Wildwood collection. Some alignment process was needed. That was addressed. the frame is on. The falcon appears to have had major side swiping. This frame was twisted, the seatube and headtubes have been pushed back to spec, and the rear has been respaced for 130mm.

The fork was not spared in need. The fork side to side was on, the offset was good, but bringing it to the table I found the drive side tine was a millimeter+ longer than the nds. I very crudely shortened the drive side and gracefully lengthened and pushed forwards the nds. Actually the tines measured was identical, the forkcrown is where the discrepancy was located.

The wheels on the Falcon are new built from spare hubs and loose rims, the spokes are from orphan wheels that were less than desirable condition. Again Shimano Frankenstein.

Life is good.

Working on my new to me 1985 Trek 2000, I've been ebaying up a bunch of carefully curated Dura Ace parts to do some justice to this old guy. I have a nice set of Mavic wheels laced to Phil hubs to ride on.
just put on one of the cleanest Dura Ace cranksets I've found. Working on a headset the rest of the day. Brakes in the next couple of days.

I still need a nice Seat post but Dura Ace seat posts bring some pretty good money, I'll do it though, I know me.

Installed my first Brooks saddle. I went for a pedal and discovered I have been missing out! I am impressed with the comfort. It was only a couple of miles, but look forward to longer rides.

I put together a Gitane Tour De France with some sturmey archer parts and have been adjusting and modifying the build as I ride with my girlfriend.

Currently this is what it is

38-19 gear ratio gives me about 39-70". Enough to keep up with Sarah and still climb some decent hills.

Inexpensive Chinese headlight with a stand light function that I converted to taillight with acrylic paint.

My 19 tooth cog was made by modifying a freewheel cog. I've ordered a 19 tooth 3/32 sturmey archer cog but honestly this one works great.

The fork on my rusty Carabela was worse than the frame. I figured I would just scuff the chrome up and paint it, but I went after it today with some Simichrome. While it isn't great, the finish is now more able to be called patina. I probably will still paint the crown, but I think the socks will look pretty OK from 10' away.
