I bought the bike from the LBS. The problem is getting there; I don't drive, and if I can put this in myself, I'd prefer that.

Well, I've only looked at them in the store, but the big metal plate goes on the side without the hinge pivot, and is connected to the lever via a threaded rod that goes through that silver metal metal loop on the right side of the hinge in your picture. The threaded rod must attach somehow to the silver thing on the left side of the hinge in your picture. There is a nut (or something similar, it has flats for a wrench to adjust the tightness of the clamp) on the rod that as I recall goes on the side closest to the big metal plate, and the whole rod has lots of blue locktite on in.

I bought a pre-owned tikit direct from Bike Friday, and it came with some frame issues and a broken braze-on. Bike Friday had me return the bike, on their dime, and gave me a brand-new tikit right off the factory line, with choice of color, and threw in a front rack. All within about two weeks. I could keep the original bike (which was rideable) until the new one arrived.
Bike Friday has also been very fast (one or two days) in sending little parts here and there.
Now that is brilliant!!! That goes beyond good service! Do they sell in the UK?..

I think BF's ideal response is because of a smallish customer base - they can actually interface with the few that require attention. Dahon with their zillions of bikes can't - it's simply not feasible. That said, more dealers holding spares would be a good thing.
