Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Sounds of Silence

A precisely tuned bike....

No iPod or cell phone...

A smooth asphalt road...

Nobody to call out...anything.

A mind free from distraction...

And...

The wind perfectly at your back.

Heaven.

Then you wake up, right?

Where the heck do you find a road free of noise (got cars?) and a smooth road? I'm jealous. Oh, and wind at your back? Only if you ride down hills backwards.

In Orange Cty NY you're always riding uphill or into a headwind. Thank God for the iPod.

Heaven happened for about a 3 minute stretch today. It doesn't happen very often or for very long, but it is magical when it does.

I would generally agree. On the other hand getting my bicycles to run smoothly without making stupid little ticky noises is a constant struggle. Bicycle maintainence SUCKS.

I ride too friggin much. I need a Pcad Team Mechanic.

awesomeness. Word.

the only variation I have on that was the one (and only) time raced my brand new Mavic Carbone Pro wheels. The bladed spokes sorta "chirp" at speeds over 30mph. Thanks to the tailwind I was going closer to 50. that's one of those moments that will always be remembered.

Being out with no one else is a wonderful experience. Especially when you 'forget' the cell phone.

Nice thread, Rad.

3 minutes of that is absolute bliss. But the last time I had 3 minutes of such wonderful riding was... let me see here...

Never.

It would be nice though.

Someone who gets it.

I love that magic moment when the wind is squarely behind you, and everything just goes silent. Palpably silent. Had that a few times today with shifting winds.

That plus the Curve-billed Thrashers calling from just about every sagebrush field. And a big flock of geese flying in low over the Rio.

Makes me feel sorry for everyone with music jammed in their ears.

I feel fortunate to live in an area where most roads are extremely quiet, back country roads in the woods. The surface isn't always smooth and the wind may not always be at your back, but it's almost always silent save for the sounds of birds and the occasional plane overhead. As for listening to music, I have no interest in having painful ear buds in my ears during a ride, but to each his own.

Easily 2 out of 6...

Most of the time 3 out of 6...

If your lucky 4 out of 6...

On an extremely rare occurrence 5 out of 6...

6 out of 6...

Better play the lottery that day as well...

Must be nice.
My ride today was more like the wind howling on a busy road while I struggled to keep myself from being blown over.
No iPod. The wind was so freaking loud I left it off.

My perfect moment is something more like when I crest a long climb and start the descent. The felling of accomplishment combined with anticipating blasting down the mountain. Oh the sweet sweet pain.

We have been looking for a smooth asphalt road in PA for quite some time but the state seems to think chip seal is good enough.

Then getting nailed by a car throwing you off your bike and onto the ground, like myself on wensday. Grr. If there is a silver lining, which at this point it seems hard to appreciate because of the pain, I could get some money and buy a new bike. Like a Specialized Tarmac Expert. Yum.

Today this happened to me too. Except that I was in my car, on the Brooklyn-Queens expressway at 5:00am and not a soul around me. A finely tuned bike was in the back, and I even found parking on 5th Avenue at Central Park in Manhattan.

And the NYC Century was a pretty good ride too, but NOT quiet or any of the above.

Whatchya talkin' 'bout....we had plenty of wind at our backs on the group ride....how do you think we were going 24-28 mph on fairly flat ground for extended clips

When it's quiet, I like that soft hiss noise the tires making rolling over the asphalt and the sound of the chain working through the RD and gears. Seems like all is right with the world, the planets have lined up in my favor, and it just doesn't get much better.

Yep! Saturday morning, we hit a section of road that we've ridden literally 100s of times. It was in bad shape...tar and chip and bumpy. BUT, it comes after about 20 minutes of climbing/rollers and it's slightly downhill for @ 5 miles.

We made the turn and to our collective surprise, it was newly paved. I'm not talking more tar and chip! I'm talking a black ribbon of smooth, freshly laid, honest to God, smooth as a billiard table ASPHALT!

We had a bit of a tailwind too. Let's just say...we made it to the next turn in a touch over 10 minutes.

The only way it could have been better is if there had been an Olympic size pool built at the end, full of semi-clothed sorority girls and ice cold beer...

Yeah, when the wind goes along with you so there's next to no noise in your ears. That's cool. Doesn't happen very often.

Sometimes I think I should live at work and work at home, I usually get headwinds the way things are now.
