Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do'able wheel build?

At 85kg, do you think Sapim CX-rays and a 32hole rim will be sturdy enough for me?
The rims will be Ambrosio Nemesis and the hubs Centaur.
Just looking for some insight and second opinions before they get the green light.

The Sapim spokes have weight limits, I believe it's 180lbs and below.

I called A/C to do a track wheel build, they were out of their 420 rims, so offered to do it on a 350 rim, but recommended against the Sapim spokes... I guess it really just depends how many watts you're going to put on them. Now for their road wheelset, Sapim spokes are offered as an option.

You should be fine. Are those the newer Centaur hubs, like 07/08? If so, I'd upgrade and get the Records. Hubs below Record nowadays have rather crappy bearings I hear.

@idiq, totally different rims. the 350 is light and relatively weak rim.

NO....THEY....DON'T...!

I truly wish whoever is out there spreading this line of bullsh*t would just shut up already. CX-Rays have no limits for weight. A/C limits weight because of their hubs, not the spokes.

I have a set of Nio19 hoops on WI hubs with CX-Ray spokes and they haven't been touched in well over 1500 km. I also have my Powertap built with CX-Ray spokes and it hasn't been touched in close to 4000 km.

I weigh 78-80 kilos and put down pretty substantial power numbers. 1350 in a little effort yesterday with a max of 1550 at the end of last season. The CX-Rays didn't turn to dust, nor did the wheel magically transform into a potato chip.

A well-built 32 hole wheel with CX-Ray spokes will hold up just fine under 85 kilos.

+1 CX-Rays are fine -- AC hubs blow. Really strong power numbers don't actually increase spoke tension that much. The worst thing for spokes is a bump, 2nd would be steep climbing under a heavy rider, where a high percentage of all weight is supported by just the rear DS spokes, and the torque is very stochastic.

To the original post, that rim is light weight. I think you're looking at a 7500-10000 mile life on that rear build before you start breaking spokes. Not that there's anything wrong with that, really.

CX-Rays are fine for the build.

That's funny, the bearings on my centaur hubs are buttery smooth after ~2200 miles. It's just that campy switched to cartridge bearings, so I'll have to replace them instead of overhaul them somewhere around 6,000-8,000 miles from now.

I actually chose centaur over record because i prefer a steel freehub that won't let cogs dig into it.

85kg isn't that heavy... As long as it is properly laced and tensioned, ANY spoke in a 32h, 2 or 3X config, will hold up just fine.
