Size 13 shoe in toe clips

Had to switch to clipless due to the fit in my toe clips. My ankles and right knee started hurting. I was blaming my shoe size. Anybody have experience with this?

Luckily no, but I did have to locate extra-large toe clips for my pedals to fit my size 12s.

Back in the 70s, when I was ridding in Italy, I remember the locals making fun of my size 12s. I ordered a pair of leather bowling shoes and had a clip added at the local farrier... Ha

I'm a wide footed size 12 and struggled for years with uncomfortable clip/pedal combos. The one setup that has really worked for me is the following...
- Specialized Touring Pedals from the mid 80s (nice wide platform)
- MKS Cage Clips (super comfortable, don't dig into / gouge shoes)
- Added spacers between cage and pedal (because even the largest cage clip still needs a bit more length)

I remember years ago when I was working in a local sports store I found a huge pair of Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars that had been special ordered but were too small for the buyer. I don't remember the size, but they fit over my own shoes with room to spare

I don't know if these are still available or if a comparable replacement is sold. I used the Specialized MTB toe clips. I'm a size 12 and used those with sneakers.
They provided a wider toe box.
An example:

Size 12-13 wide here. MKS extra large clips or — if you can find them, LL shimano clips for your shimano pedals.

I wear 13W shoes. I haven't had any luck with clips fitting, If I have clips at all, they're half- or quarter-clips, MKS always...one set is wire, the other is stamped stainless steel.

Toe clips are readily available in both longer length and in taller toe box. I use long and tall. I also wear US size 13.

I will likely try some spacers, as I am close to okay on foot position but can only know for certain after trying spacers.

spacer

I used to ride my bike to lunch while at work. I wore steel toed boots for work and had to install similar spacers on my toe clips.

OP has already solved the root cause by going clipless. Like I did with my 13EE feet. You all are entitled to your opinions, but for me, clipless are superior in every way.

Oh, sure, we can talk about the superior performance of clipless all day. But nothing beats the cool factor of awesome platform pedals with clips and leather straps for a C&V rig!

The numb feet that I suffered with for 25 years ain't listening.

Peace, dudes, I understand. For period conformance, my Raleigh Pro still has its toe clips. But that bike doesn't get ridden for more than twenty or so miles, and certainly not more than one day in a row. And my Tourist rod brakes are also inferior to modern cable brakes in every way, but they're part and parcel of the old roadster experience.

I always attributed this to the top of the toe clip and laces pressing a nerve on top of my foot. Properly sized clips avoid that spot and no more numb feet.

I have worn size 13/14 shoes for many decades. The way to go is with flat pedals. The research says there is no power advantage for cyclists in using foot retention, and it makes your muscles and skill-set weaken by not having to develop the ability, coordination or muscles to keep your feet on flat pedals.

One of the best feelings in cycling is being free of all of that pedal garbage and just jumping on the bike and taking off. As an experiment I recently put together the most simple road bike I could with what I could get for free or pocket-change. It is a single-speed, coaster-braked road bike with flat pedals and nothing else on it. Boy is it great, I just love it and how simple it makes cycling.
