Most often, high vis if I am going to ride in traffic. Otherwise, normally whatever is on top of my sock drawer. Great subject. We are all richer for knowing each other's sock preferences.

I'm in the "match my outfit" crowd. At least most often. I figure why not?
I probably have 30 pairs of cycling socks that I've accumulated over the years. In many colors. In the last two years, I've begun to accumulate non-symmetrically designed socks. They have the same colors on each in the pair, but the two sock designs are different in pattern or stripe thickness or some detail. They add a bit of flair.
But, what do I know?

Black ankle socks to match my black shoes. But if I wear white shoes I'll wear white ankle socks. I've got enough reflective tape, lights and hi-viz shirt/jersey on that I shouldn't need brightly colored socks to get drivers' attention.

Me wants. Would go great with my red and black panniers and black touring bike. Usually the biggest PITA around camp.

Wore white ankles for decades, but they all became dingy or got grease on them. When black arrived I thought to myself, self this makes perfect sense and bought 10 pairs of black ankles. Got some argyle Marino’s for cold weather riding, but are in dark patterns.
The guy wearing high viz socks makes perfect sense from a safety perspective but I just can’t go there and will stick to my flashing light when in shady areas.

Well, they're not cycling socks, but Macy's used to sell a six-pack of Polo ankle socks for $20. They're a little plush, but come in a wide range of colors to match whatever jersey I have on.
Actually, they still sell them, but now the tops are all black and just the bottoms have color. At least the little guy on horseback would match.

Definitely not white.
Between grease and dirt, they get disgusting way too fast.

stem size for take a look?
Hi viz on road. The first time I drove up behind a rider wearing them they looked like two bright yellow lights going up and down. Coupled with his bright red blinker and hi viz jersey and rear view mirror (Take a Look"), I initially thought, "eesh, I'll never do, THAT!". Heck, the first thing I used to take off a bike was the reflector.
Then I had a close call a couple of days later on my bike. I've been hi viz jersey and socks ever since....and a Take a Look mirror.
I don't give a s*** what other peope think, but, a lot of people are doing exactly what I am doing and I see more every day. And, many are experienced riders too.

I wear neon green socks because years ago I was turned down for a job as a flight simulator technician because the manager had seen me wear them one Friday evening after landing at the airport and said he would never hire anyone who would wear green socks. It turned out the job was a contract job to train flight crews for Phillip Morris, one of the most murderous corporations in history as part of an industry who supply customers and encourage them to force secondhand smoke into their bodies causing 600,000 death a year worldwide according to the World Health Organization. Years later I had to leave a job teaching math in a university because I had a supervisor who was stealing my wages and lawyers told me I had no recourse. He prohibited green socks.
