Sure do the DIY thing. Let us know how it goes.
Slap a brake on there in case the thing goes tits up when you're flying down a hill, but other than that I don't see any problems.

that is one of the worst stitching jobs I've ever seen for a high stress joint.

O_O Woah, slipper pedals.. And don't worry, i have a sewing machine (: ... I'd love to get the holdfast grips(i only live 20~30 miles away from Brooklyn) but as a student, i am pretty low on money, and i love DIY's! I already have ratchet straps and all i need would be velcros. Thanks for the opinion guys!

if you do a better stitching job than what was pictured, it should be good.

Your cog is slipping.
Even better than the quote is the pic of the dude on the right, holding the stupid pedal and looking all serious.

The DIY doesn't look bad. I'd also probably sew the velcro on to the strap, rather than rely on the sticky-back adhesive.
Since you're mucking around with the sewing machine anyway, I'd sew a strip of retro-reflective tape on.
OTOH, unless you have the strapping and velcro laying around, this may run you about the same as a set of PowerGrips.

Haha, sure, i'll sew the velcro on. Uhh. I do have the strappings (around 8ft) lying around but not velcro so i'll have to check my local craftstore and see how much they go for. I think I will probably need around 3~5ft of it?
