Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Need some advice

Hi guys,

I'm out enjoying my new bike, but I've been encountering a problem as I try to slow down my pedaling on the decline. The chainring feels like it slips. . . then as I get back onto a flat and start pedaling hard it slips back to the forward position.

Any idea what this could be? Could I have installed the bottom bracket incorrectly?

Thanks in advance!

It is a fixed gear? Maybe a loose lockring on the rear hub/cog?

Do you have a lockring tool/spanner to check/tighten it?

I have one like this Shimano that has both a whip and spanner...

Yes it's a fixed gear, I didn't think about the lock ring. I'll take a look at it as well.

Cog goes on forward in the pedal stroke direction and lockring on in reverse... so pedal hard up a hill and stop (don't backpedal/skid) at the top should get the cog tight... then wrench on the lockring. Or could use a whip or rotofix to tighten the cog, and wrench on the lockring.

They say check the lockring before each ride to be sure you're good to go.

Sweet, sounds good. I'll try that out tomorrow, if for some reason that doesn't work could there be another symptom?

That should be the only thing that can slip and re-tighten... hmm. Unless there is something really wrong in the crank area or the rear wheel is not tight and your chain is loosening too when it happens.
