47 miles today on the Dawes. Sunny, mid 80s. Used some old dirt roads for connectors on the loop since I was on the Dawes.









I worked on the Gitane this morning: moved the levers down, readjusted the brakes, taped the bars with Newbaum's green bar tape and finished it with hemp twine. I really wanted to ride it, but decided to wait until after I shellac it this week.

Did my first 50 mile ride. We rode all the way to Woodstock Il and back. This is the town that Groundhog Day was filmed. I went with two guys I just meet, both seasoned riders, very fast. How did I do? I will just tell people "I made those guys rest a lot".

First century EVER today, 100.8 miles in 8 hours and 30 minutes (including stops). Fairly lofty goals for our first 100 mile ride, since our longest rides EVER were around 35 miles. 'Training' consisted of plenty of commuting and that is it. Just us two, no support, and lots AND LOTS of hills. Extremely happy with the time we made, and what we accomplished. My Miyata did GREAT, the granny upfront got plenty of work on the hillclimbs, and the ride was SMOOTH. Only issue I had was trying to shift into the granny halfway up a hill, and lost the change inboard. Quick fix and I was on my way to catch up. My quads/calves are sore, but the rest of me feels good. Let's see if I will be able to walk tomorrow. Just a few pics!

Of course it is! You're in Indiana, right? Come to New England. One of our native crops is the short, steep hill.

FWIW, I look for flat roads for my long rides.

There wasn't much planning for this to be honest. Found a state park that was around 50 miles away from home base (Louisville, KY) and went for it. Next route will be better planned, and NOT have 'knobs' in the first/last 20 miles!

Funny thing was I was told it was going to be 40 miles and we where taking the flat route. Cyclists have no real idea of distance or cartography I have learned so far. Hills and wind the entire ride. It was fun though. I need to train harder.

Great ride photos everyone! Imagining I'm out with you all. It's averaging 110F here in PHX. Even the evenings are still 100 at 9pm...so my riding season has ended early this Summer.

Congrats on a milestone! Quite excellent for someone who never rode such mileage. I hope to be able to do the same....my first century. Personal best is 52 miles this year under ideal weather/temps and significant climbs. Took me 7 hours, with a big lunch and photo stops. So you did it in great time. That pizza was well earned.

I just got back home to Colorado after spending the last 3 weeks visiting my parents in Oregon. I put a lot of miles on my Dad's old Raleigh Olympian. Oregon is pretty awesome for cycling. I found several long country roads to ride with little traffic and incredible scenery. I did lot's of rides in the 20-50 mile range and the day before I left I did an 80 mile ride with about 8000 ft elevation gain. I took pics on some of my rides but unfortunately I didn't bring the camera every time.

@Turkey lurkey - where in Oregon? I know where the bike was but the Forest? Around Eugene or Corvallis? Of courts the entire Willamette valley with the Cascades & coastal range gives views like that. (Can you tell I LOVE my state)?

Yeah man, it's my retro gravel grinder. My first reynolds 531 (only main triangle). I love this bike. It was supposed to be my winter bike, but I still ride it. I once told Jim Muller that I should have bought this bike instead of my Gitane but I love that bike too. I feel so spoiled, I probably could live with one or two instead of the seven I have (plus 2 unbuilt frames). Decadent american.

I haven't seen any pics from Maryland in a while. What's up?
