Sun came back out today for me to put another 18 miles on my Velo Cheapo entry. Nice break, since it's been, like, a whole week since it has been practical to ride a non-fendered bike around here, wet and mid-40's every day. O! How we Pacific Nor'westers so Suffer in Winter!

There are some pretty bikes here. Guess I'll have to get the camera out soon, to show some which are less so. I finally rode to Merida yesterday, for the first time since moving out. I went to an early dinner party; then rode back home in the dark. Have I mentioned how much I'm enjoying my Busch and Muller dynamo lights? 83.3 km r/t, though a bit longer on the way in. 37 km one way is certainly doable.

Today I rode my bike to where my wife got her car stuck in snow that had drifted across the road overnight. I couldn't get her freed fast enough, so she left the car there and walked to work. I rode back home and got a shovel. So much for riding! Walked back to the car and had a nice time clearing the road, eventually got the car out and drove it to her office... walking home, wished I'd brought my bike. 32 days until Spring. Oy.

Rode 52 miles with a friend of mine, my GF was working nearby so she gave us a ride home after beers and sandwiches.

After digging thru a 22' deep (measured with the tape), nearly 6' high snow bank to provide access to the fire hydrant, and then dealing with a massive ice dam that defied the heater cables (Two, in parallel, in the gutter itself), I don't have a whit of extra energy to even contemplate the idea of going for a ride...

VR, rhm, it's great to see someone getting out! Even if just to rescue the wife's car. Ed., we sympathize. Somewhere under one of our snowbanks is a storm drain that probably should be opened up before March rains arrive. We have ice on our roof but I have absolutely no way to get to it.

We were out skiing at Bretton Woods again today, just arrived home. The high temp up there was 0F, or maybe 1F. Not as windy as yesterday though.

Went up to Sonoma county for the weekend for a wedding. Squeezed a ride in at one point and managed to take a few pictures. Really miss living up there.

This is not supposed to be possible - not in February - but I rode up to Hurricane Ridge today. Well, most of the way, as I was short on time and ended up driving the first five miles up to Heart o' the Hills and biked it from there. I had the pleasure of riding fellow C&Ver Wildwood's mid-80's Eddy Merckx, which he's loaned to me for bit, since we fit the same size and he likes showing off his bikes. (He's very good about sharing his toys.)

Normally the road this time of year is covered in ice and snow, "All vehicles must carry tire chains," but this year the snow is a no-show. Idle snowplow at about 4000 ft elevation:

By the time I got up to the 5000 ft level, there was finally some snow visible in north-slope ditches. Yay.

Needless to say, the skiers and snowboarders didn't get a season this year.

Its been really warm here for the last couple weeks, in the fiftys or so, and have ridden quite a bit more than I could have hoped, most miles in a February ever for me. Three days ago it was 72 degrees here in Arkansas, got in a twenty miler. Today it was about 15. Made it just far enough through this super fluffy powder to decide that it wasn't worth it today. My brakes seized up from water melting into them after bringing it out of the warm garage. The lids on my vacuum flasks froze shut with boiling hot tea in them. Had to kick the front derailleur to get it to shift down. The most fun Ive had in a 1/8th mile ride all year!

The road to nowhere.



First time on rollers. After about five minutes with a hand on the door jamb the hip was used for a bit longer as a sort of bumper to keep me from venturing to far to the left or right. I wound up closing out a half-hour first ride on them with some intervals. What a blast - these should smooth me out quite a bit.

I'm with Ed. No pix though, seen one one six foot pile of snow you've seen them all. especially at an intersection. The time I would've spent riding I'm shoveling. Today was a mere 50 minutes digging a path from the back door around to the drive way. Actually have been enjoying the time out in the fresh air.

Was foggy early on, but turned into a 60 degree day.



I got out this morning for a good ride before the clouds rolled in.

Just returned to Northern VA from Palm Springs, where I rode the Tour de Palm Springs century. Great ride, nice people, good food, too! Gotta watch your hydration in the heat and dry air, though. Had a ball in PS, so warm and sunny. Was able to ride more than just the Tour but should have brought more riding clothes- next year we're spending two weeks here to take advantage of the weather.


Also have to mention my new EVOC soft side travel bag, which worked like a charm, no damage to the vintage Cannondale ST with modern drive train (see pic below) that I put together a month ago for traveling. 10 minutes from assembled bike to fully packed bag, same time to take it out and set it up. Awesome. But what the airlines charge to bring it with you is a crime.

I took a train ride into Portland to meet a friend and shop at, where else, Universal Cycles. Went to a nearby food cart pod and had a great lunch with dessert next door at Crema. She was riding her new Salsa Mamasita with custom fabricated attachments for bottle cages, etc. Her bike got ALL the attention, while my lowly '88 Rockhopper sat in the shadows. It was about 55 & mixed sun and clouds but no rain and almost no wind. It was a fantastic day for my urban adventure.

Chrome Molly

17 miles in 17 degrees late this morning. After a trip to the hardware store, I went by one of the local ski trails to check out the conditions. Not so good, but it was a decent day for biking. Took a little spin on one of the "groomed" fatbike trails with my much smaller tires. It was fun, but a little sketchy in spots.

Given tomorrow's near zero high prediction, I wish I'd have had more time to ride today. Getting that February stir crazy feeling.

I was supposed to go out for a ride with some friends this morning but some pipes in the crawl space under my home froze so I had the wonderful task of crawling around with a hair dryer to defrost the pipes before they burst. The crawl space is not very hospitable on a normal day but with temperatures in the teens it is doubly bad.

Not wanting to go completely without riding, I suited up for a ride this afternoon. The temperature had warmed up quite a bit but we then got snow and freezing rain. Still managed just over an hour on the trike. When I got home there was about 4" on the driveway.

Yet another 100F plus temps weekend (when will it end) so rode 58km along the coast line. Since I have a dedicated hills bike I returned my Ricardo to original. It could only take a 26t freewheel so now it'll keep the Winner 11-23.

That's funny I would imagine with 19c tires that would slice through the snow well and you can't fall off.
