Trike riding is great fun. Once you get the hang of it, it is very simple but when starting out most people have great difficulty as you basically have to unlearn bicycle riding concepts. My trike is fitted out with 23 mm tyres and they do indeed cut through the snow to the underlying road surface.

Great spring like weather here this weekend.
I got out on the fixed gear and rode about 50 miles with Bob Freeman on Saturday.



He was riding a drop dead gorgeous bike that Kevin Sayles made for him a few years ago.



Here is a detail shot of the floating sprocket wheelset Bob built up for this very special bike.

I've been on a winter hiatius in southern Florida and my wife and I did an afternoon ride on the Dahon folders we found at TJMaxx last month. They are fun for what they are and Mrs. PB finds her Dahon to be very easy to ride, so that's a win-win!

This would be the first time I rode my Reflex since I put it away in November for winter. It was a balmy 23 degrees F today and since there is no salt used on the back roads here, I decided to go for a nice winter ride............

I went out on my all-rounder, into territory I've never been in before. Hopping from tiny pueblo to tiny pueblo. In one of them, I asked middle-aged couple if I was on the right road to the next tiny pueblo. They asked me where I was from: the US; which part? Ohio. At which point they both lit up and started talking to my in pretty good English. They have a good friend from Ohio, who teaches at a college in Louisiana. So we chit chatted a bit, in Spanglish. They told me where they live and invited me to visit the next time I pass through. I'll take them up on it.
Further on down the road, I come to a man selling ice cream by the side of the road--made the way my parents used to make it, except now they have motors to do the turning. I had a delicious cup of coconut. Moments later I entered a tiny road, approximately 14 km long, which passed through two tiny ghost pueblos, both of which are haciendas in ruins. And ultimately I arrived in Cacalchen, a largish pueblo, relatively speaking. It had taken me 5 hours to cover the 65 km thus far, and I had an absolute blast doing it. At this pueblo I got my first taste of a really smooth road surface, coupled with a light tailwind for the remaining 17 km home.
And yes, I will really, really try to remember to take a camera on future such rides. 87 km/55 miles in all in temps in the mid-80s, a little warm for this time of year.

Haven't posted many pictures - getting out for around 3 rides a week thanks to work but am also adding in weight training 3 days a week and 2 days of running. The fitness feels like it's coming around. Decided to go up into the hills yesterday for a mellow 20 mile ride. The roads have dried out nicely and the road grader work to fix log truck damage (clearing fire damaged trees again) made for some caviar mtb riding.

Took the Trek 950 - first ride on it since Christmas. That hill way in the background is normally completely white with about 4-5 ft of snow this time of year. We're running 30% of normal snowpack which, for those of you back east you'd probably love to give us some. Without some major storms in the coming month irrigation will be an issue this year.



That rock outcropping, small cliff is a great place for contemplation ---- once you get to it.

Mercer Island, WA. Calkins Point off Luther Burbank Park, looking NW towards Seattle.


Did a circumnavigation of Mercer Island, a moneyed 'burb of Seattle. Those with an eye towards architecture can ride around the island noting a mock Tudor manse next door to a stark white Bauhaus temple of modernity next to an echt Northwest Lindal Cedar home with a view deck that looks like the prow of the Titanic, plunked down next to a mock Italianate villa. And on the next street, a bunch of modest ranch houses from the 1950's .

Quick jump across the I-90 bridge to Seattle, it's the portal to the Pacific, y'know (gotta read the fine print on the portal):



Right there where the freeway goes under Seattle, there's a friendly little bike tunnel that does so also


Later in the afternoon, after buying a bunch of cheap crap at Ikea for the hotel I run, I was on the Green River trail out of Kent. Mt Rainier was wearing a jaunty little white cap


Those with an eye toward civil engineering will notice a ton of earthmoving and replanting has been done on this section of the Green River, and the locals are probably all pretty pleased that 80 years worth of industrial waste and illegal dumping has been removed from the water course over the last few years. Lookin' good, G.R.!

I failed to ride a century in February. Weather was not cooperative, and I got enough cold weather riding just riding to the train station every day. But on Sunday I thought I'd kick off March with a metric century, anyway. Temps in the upper 20's seemed pretty warm, relative to what I've been commuting in, so I headed out. The sun failed to put in an appearance.

I climbed a hill I'm not familiar with; that was fun.


Met a friend and his son down by Washington Crossing (on the Delaware River; that's the big frozen thing behind the bike):


Just about then the snow started in earnest. Within a couple miles the roads were turning white. We bailed. I stopped for a bite to eat before I got home; here's how much snow fell while I was eating:



Total, 32 miles. Oy. Well, I tried!

Did my longer shakedown run for the Roberts today, an exact metric century. Given our weather, this may be the year for at least a century a month (metrics in the winter months, and the full Monty when it's nicer). The trip included a stop to purchase a Carradice Nelson Longflap, so the seat bag grew by about 17+ liters over the trip.



My impressions of the Roberts:
-Wow those 105's and Compass tires really roll nicely, the 105 hubs having felt a little tight on the stand even after adjustment
-A bike where it's very easy to stay "on top of it" as far as cadence, given the close ratio 10 speed gearing
-The 32 spokes with fenders weren't as much of a cross wind liability that I thought they would be
-Some on the fly tweaking of the RD cable length was needed, but afterward it behaved well
-It fits really well; the bar, stem, seat guesswork was right on
-Really like the 46 front gearing, as front ring changes aren't as needed with a 27 on the back
-Want the mudflap for the front fender, as the BB area got some spray as it is set up now
-Getting used to the narrow Q of the Nervar crank
-The Mafac brakes do squeal a bit in front when really clamped down, but that lessened over the trip (hope it goes away once the pads bed in)
-Love the FD tweakability of a bar end shifter, as always
-With the new Nelson saddlebag, this is my new credit card tourer and iffy weather rider
-Just racy enough when it needs to be, no hint of sluggishness

Impressions were helped by the fact the wind essentially blew me home from Minneapolis to east of St Paul

No photos - was riding too hard to stop today. An unheard of 66 degrees here on March 7 and had time for a 25 miler before heading in to town to draft players for our fastpitch softball little league team.

First ride on this bike in 4 or 5 years post spinal fusion, the transition from upright mtb to my best bike is complete. The frames in very different spec now, may not qualify for the c/v forum anymore

jbc-rider, your pics of rides down under always look like great explorations. At least one always shows a nice overlook from a high place! Nice bike too, with the spare sew-up in the bottle cage.

So today is when the US switches over to Daylight Saving Time, that most misguided invention. The hard part is waking up at 2AM to change the clocks. (In the autumn we have to wake up to set back the clocks, and then an hour later do it again.) People complain about how in the spring they lose an hour of sleep. But I don't get something. If I change the clocks and then wake up when I usually do at 6, I'd get to sleep till 7. That seems like more sleep, not less.

So anyway, I'm not sure whether you are on the east side or west side of the International Date Line. So is your ride from today or tomorrow? Do we need to rename this thread Where'd You Ride Tomorrow? The switch to DST just make it more confusing.

I'd go for a ride today but the current lack of sun in damp 30degF air feels mighty cold.

Got out for a 30 mile MTB ride with Alex Moll and Bob Freeman on Saturday.

Mostly fire roads, we did catch about 8 miles of single track.
We took a detour from the single track and did a hard climb up a logging road for a few miles and decided to bag it at this point when it became apparent we were running out of time.

The old CC road took some damage this winter

We ended the day back in town at the North Bend Bar and Grill. Dinner and a cold IPA never tasted so good
