Got on the road at 7:45am and headed south into Visalia, catching a coffee on the way, then went on through the countryside to Lindsay. I stopped in at Cairns Corner, which is a great fruit stand that sells local produce year-round, and had a cream soda and protein bar to perk me up. The first olive trees in Tulare County are still standing along the roadside there, perhaps forty or fifty feet tall - they were planted there by John Cairns in 1894.

From there I went into town and meandered through a park where there's a neat German ship cannon, which was taken from the deck of the Cormoran, which was sunk in Guam harbor in one of the first engagements for the United States during WWI (April 6, 1917).

After that I went back towards Woodlake, taking a steep hill road out of Lindsay that forced me to walk my bike for a bit, but where I enjoyed some views instead of huffing and puffing. On the way into Woodlake I stopped to have a salad at the Runway Cafe (next to a small air field), then wended my way home after taking a donut and coffee in town.

I was out for seven hours and two minutes with plenty of stops and city traffic, and traveled 75.5 miles.

71.5 miles with @wilfried riding the Tour de Staten Island. We rode the 50-mile route, and I live about 10 miles away from the Staten Island Ferry terminal. Blue skies, comfy temperatures and a very chill crowd. A couple of guys rode big-wheeled unicycles, a few guys were boogying along with kids in trailers, saw at least 3 tandems, 2 folks on "treadle" bikes (seriously?), a dog-in-a-bag, and a whole lot of happy people. Very few C&V bikes, one young lady on a mostly original Super Course Mk. II and another on a 3-speed Dunelt (probably riding the 35-mile route). I've ridden very little this season so my legs feel it!

I have a degree in European history and always dreamed about getting far away from here when I was younger. After returning home from international travels during the past few years, I would have an urge to explore that led me to begin obsessively wandering around the valley between trips. The place really can be beautiful, but you often do have to search in the nooks and crannies to find the gems!

My efforts were rewarded with a post-ride stop at my local brewery. They were celebrating 2 years since opening their tap room. Members got three free beers and pretty much had the run of the place. Stopped feeling the effects if the ride halfway through the second beer. Not bad for a town that was essentially "dry" when I moved here 15 years ago.

Photo dump. Three sunny, warmish rides in three days. Not bad! Wind was brutal each day, but hey, good to whip one into shape...maybe.

Saturday was a solo ride on the MTB in the morning:







Sunday's plan was for a mix of road and cross-country with a buddy on an all-road type of bike. We took the pavement out to Penwood near the top of Talcott Mt. in Bloomfield, then explored a new-to-us trail that turned out to be mostly hike-a-bike terrain...a good hike, but to be avoided on bikes in the future.











Today was a solo mixed ride on the 650b Raleigh. Was feeling good after getting warmed up so stayed out for about 2.5 hours before having to get back home.

apparently just up river from me on the Delaware is a grave site for unidentified Revolutionary War Solidiers (and one guy with a name) that i've ridden by many times but never noticed until recently.






They perished due to the elements prior to the Battle of Trenton.

Lunch day rides continue - the hills are getting a little easier. Persistence builds the fitness right. Snow is off the road at the "lower" elevations.



At the junction you can go right and climb right away for a couple thousand feet to the top of the lower ridge, or go left and have climbing at a more gradual rate. Lots of closed roads and jeep trails make for fun.

Great scenery @zukahn1 I'm rather envious, as it's getting very warm here in central California and spring is already slipping into summer...

Today was a very busy day for me, starting with two and a half hours out on the river cutting down invasive tree tobacco (Nicotiana glauca) by the river, and preparing for a weekend up in the Sierra Nevada doing forestry work. I managed to get a ride in between, doing a 33 mile round to Orange Cove on my custom Centurion Le Mans. I still only have it set up as a fixed gear, but I like that very much so no problemo! It was a nice jaunt.

I did yardwork the last 2 days when the weather was nice, so today i treated myself with a favored ride along the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River, out of North Bend. New road, oh so smooth, much of the way, so a day for the best tires. Little bit of gravel.

Good to know that the motor on this bike is 'street legal' = best compliment in a while.

I got out on the Sparrow for the fourth time this week. Weather forecast was for 80 and a bit breezy, and I felt the breeze on the way home, but not really the heat. It was hot, but I don't know if it got to 80. Anyhow, another fun ride except that I lost a contact lens - again! I lost it only 500 meters past the place I lost the last one, too, so that was more than a little weird. I tell ya, I'm seriously considering Lasik now, even though my TriCare Prime doesn't cover it. To be done with corrective lenses would be a blessing after all these years...

And lastly, more so sadly... Look at what Capital One has done inside the pristine "horse shoe shaped" West Creek Pkwy business complex... They started clearing out the woods, and are building huge townhouses, etc...

Oops... Forgot to include this from my ride earlier. As I also wrote on FB:

"Oh yeah, I forgot... I did my good deed for the day too. While in West Creek Pkwy, just near the overpass of the 288 expressway, I noticed another cyclist, off his bike, sitting in the grass, rubbing his left foot. I had too much speed, and simply waved to him as I rode by. But then, something hit me or perhaps it's still the Coast Guardsman in me, but I slowed down, turned around in the same lane, and rode back to him. I asked him, "Hey, are you alright?". He said that he just bought a new pair of bicycle shoes and was trying to break them in. I looked at his left heel, and he had a bleeding blister above his small sport sock. I said, "Dude, you're bleeding!" and he said, "Yeah, I know. I'm alright. Thanks for stopping!". I got off my bike, unzipped my seat bag, and sift though it and pull out a plastic container of bandaids. I hand them to him and say, "Here's a bandaid for you!". He takes a bandaid, thanks me again, and puts it on his left heel. I tell him, "Have a great ride. Take care!", and turn around and resume my ride."

I guess the moral of this story is that we cyclists look out for one another, no matter who we are or what we ride!

After I rode the Tour de Staten Island last week my wife suggested we go on an out-of-town ride this weekend. Since one of our boys has our car that meant going somewhere by train. Today we rode to the Harlem Metro-North station and went about an hour north to Katonah. From there it's about 6 miles west to the North County Bikeway which follows the right of way of the former New York Central Railway's Putnam line. We rode about 20 miles south on it, our first time. It's a great trail, well-surfaced and it rolls through some very pretty country. We went to the station at Tarrytown on the Hudson River and ended up in a car full of riders from the New York Cycle Club who were heading home from an 80-miler that started in Manhattan and went up to Beacon, NY. They were pretty jolly, and we had fun chatting with them. Wewere back at 125th street before we knew it. Just about 30 miles in all, and we had a great time. Will do again!
